Ssick92's IM Nuvo 10g Nano Reef Build Thread

Hey everyone,

I have been out of the fish tank scene for a bit as I had to move houses, and been working too much to take care of a larger tank. I previously had a 30g reef throughout college, and then upgraded to a 60g for about a year, but had to take both of those down. I am now in a new place in Orange County, CA, and don't have the space or time for a larger tank so I decided to bite the bullet again and set up a Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion 10g Nano tank. I am going to set it up as a mixed reef with a couple fish, mostly softies and LPS, but probably add some branching montis or other SPS later on.

The tank is just under a month old at this point, so I figured I would start a build thread as I start to increase my coral collection.

Anyway, below is my list of equipment:
  • Tank - IM Nuvo 10g AIO
  • Lighting - AI Prime HD+
  • Filtration - InTank Media Basket with Filter Floss and Chemipure Blue
  • Flow - Vortech MP10QD
  • ATO - Tunze Osmolator Nano
  • 8lbs Live Rock
  • 10lbs Caribsea Aragonite Special Grade Reef Sand
  • Salt - Red Sea Coral Pro (will probably switch to B-Ionic after this bucket is used up)

Current tank inhabitants:
Fish & Inverts:
  • Pair of B&W Oscellaris Clownfish
  • Yellow Watchman Goby and Tiger Pistol Shrimp
  • Cleaner Shrimp
  • 5x Astrea Snails
  • 8x small Nassarius Snails
  • 4x Red Tipped Hermit Crabs

Corals:
  • Radiactive Dragon Eyes Zoas
  • Fire and Ice Zoas
  • Green / Orange Mushroom
  • Gold Tipped Hammer Coral

I'm very excited about this tank, but not really sure what to expect because it is my first AIO tank (all others had a sump). My current plan is not to have a skimmer or dosing regimen, and rely on 10-20% water changes weekly for nutrient control and replenishment of calc/alk. If I end up putting more SPS in later on I might have to revisit the plan to not dose anything, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

I love tank photography so you'll probably be seeing lots of macro shots and videos from me in the future :)

Let me know what you think of my setup and if you have any tips/secrets to maintaining a nano tank and creating a thriving reef environment in such a small package.

Here are some pictures of my setup so far:

I am already battling with zoa eating nudibranchs, hence why my zoas are all on the sandbed. I have been doing a 2x dose Revive dip every other day for the last week and visually inspecting for egg sacks. It seems to have nuked them all... I am going to be reattaching the zoas to the rockwork and keep an eye out for any signs of a return infestation, but every frag of zoas I have ever gotten from this LFS has been infected with these nudi's.

Fingers crossed I have gotten them all...

Just a tip, some time the dips dont work. The stores use a really strong dip when they dip. Some nudibranchs can become resistant. I would suggest putting the zoas in a tube and using a turkey baster to "blow" the branchs off. I also have to use tweezers sometimes. hope this help!

I agree, however when I have been doing my dips I have been using twice the recommended dosage, and have been putting each frag in their own container and using a turkey baster to blast off the nudi's during the dip. Then I inspect and manually remove any nudi's that made it through the dip before rinsing and placing them back in the tank. My last 2 dips did not have any nudi's and I don't see any signs of juvenile's or egg sacks on the frags themselves, so I'm hopeful that I have eradicated them...

That sounds like a good practice to me. good luck hopefully you can get rid of them!

Well I figured I would give an update on the tank. I rotated the middle rock piece to give some additional coral placement options, and get better water flow through the rockwork. The pink you see is the remaining epoxy that I couldn't get off...

It seems as though I have beaten the zoa eating nudibranchs once and for all. Both zoa colonies are now happy as can be with full extension and continually improving coloring. Also replaced the zoas onto their final locations on the rocks, and traded the green zoa colony for an RBTA that wasn't doing so well in a fellow reefers tank. I also added a Yellow Watchman Goby + Tiger Pistol shrimp pair, along with an acro frag that the LFS threw in for free (not in great condition so don't have too high of hopes for it's success).

Here are some photos I took today:

Actually ended up picking up some more SPS frags that were at prices I just couldn't turn down. I'll update with pictures soon. They are in much better condition than the free one...

Is that the 12" or 18" flex arm on your ai prime?
It is the 18", but I don't have it mounted to the tank. I have it mounted directly to the wall next to the tank and it is about 6" below the top of the tank. When I purchased I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to do with it, so I wanted to make sure I had enough length to do whatever I wanted with it. I'll upload a picture in a little of how I mounted it.

Below is a picture of the mount. If you were going to mount directly to your tank, you could probably get away with the 12", but I didn't like the clip that mounts to the tank, so I took off half of it and screwed it directly to my wall.

How do uou like the prime hd? Ive got the same tank and my light will be here wed. What % are you running?

I love it, the fact that it is WiFi capable makes setup an absolute breeze. Currently I have the following (at peak):
UV - 15
V - 15
RY - 35
B - 35
G - 10
DR - 10
CW - 20

But I also have it on acclimation mode at 25% and slowly ramping up over a few months.

Link for the stand? Looking to setup a Nuvo 10 myself but haven't found a good stand idea other than the biocube 14g or building one myself.
