Stand concerns

Huh, that's ply sandwiched between MDF, not as bad(I don't have this material available to me in my area to my knowledge, though again, I'm not looking as I'm not into MDF at all, not just for reasons mentioned but cutting lumber every day, healthwise...)

Ok, I just wanted to make sure. So when I ask him to build another one, do I ask him to build it all out of plywood correct? Would you say 1/2" is fine? Also to glue all the seams and use zinc coated screws as well right?

Just to confirm that its MDF, this is the material that was used:

This is actually a good material if you Prime and paint it properly..

Still my concern is how is it supported where the sides pass the cabinet floor.. The screws are holding it which will do better in this material then in MDF..

We have it here but only 5/4 thickness NO BIG BOX store carries it has to come from Contractor sales like at k&i lumber and Cox millwork

I wouldn't trust it.

An ounce of prevention is worth 50 gallons of water in the floor .

Yeah most of my stuff does come from mill yards much more than box stores, just never seen it.
The ply does add strength, just curious how the MDF part holds up.
One thing about sealing MDF, it only takes one seam or screw to create an invitation for water, and then it can slowly make it's way deeper, but as mentioned I have no exp w/ that particular product.

As for ply, half inch will work, but when you take in consideration screw thickness it does not leave much meat or room for error, but it does look like your guy has some skills, just probably not familiar w/ aquarium cab needs.
I always just use 3/4 ply, but our ground shakes a bit, I'm not one to sacrifice sound sleep for a few bucks saved.
I suppose that stand could be used if he modified that toe kick to give tank rim to floor vertical support.

I pretty much agree with everything daveocean has mentioned. I don't care for mdf eighther. About the only time I use it is to make the actual raised panel on a raised panel door. If u want to rebuild the stand I would use something like 3/4" birch if u want to paint it, or 3/4" oak or cypress plywood if u want to stain it.

Like he said, the stand u have could be used but the bottom would have to be redone to where the front, back & sides of the stand actually sit on top of the bottom frame. How it is now the screws are what will be holding all the weight. I would get him to use some type of exterior wood screws also, those drywall screws do rust easily but they also aren't as strong as wood screws.

Thanks for all the help and advice guys! As it stands, I'll be having another one built. I got in touch with someone else who has built stands for LFS and has a pretty nice track record among my local reef club. Too bad I didn't know about him first.
