stand skinning ideas needed....

150g 6ft.
Stand is framed with 2x4's

The stand has about a 3.25 inch lip around the tank (had to over build stand to accomodate same width sump)

The stand will need to have 3 doors on front & 4th door on one end. also i will need a matching canopy about 8-10 inches tall.

Anyway i'm at the point in the build to skin this thing and start filling soon after.

anyone have some ideas, suggestions? who knows maybe a cabinet maker will have something to say (farmer)

You could use 3/4'' or 1/4'' oak, cherry, birch, or any hardwood plywood, most are sanded on one side. You can stain to your liking, or if you are painting, just use regular sanded plywood. If you are staining, I would recommend 3 or more coats of polyurethane to seal the wood.

You could also use laminate over the ply for endless combos.

For the doors, I would look for an overstock or discontinue warehouse. There is a warehouse close to me that sells a ton of unfinished cabinet door sizes cheaper than you could build yourself. You just have to invest a little time to find all the same styles and sizes you want.

Use a birdseye maple laminate. That would look awesome and unique.

If you're only skinning it (non structural), you can use anything from 1/4" plywood on up. Do you have a picture of the stand?

After you put plywood over it, you can dress it up with applied moldings. All you need is a half-decent miterbox (a good power miter box is even better), some glue, a brad nailer (or hammer) and you're good to go. If you're going to go that route, oak would probably be your best bet as there are lots of choices for moldings. If you want to go specialty, you could go with maple, walnut, etc. but you'll have to go to St. Louis Hardwood, St. Charles Hardwood or the like for your ply and moldings.

yes, only skinning (not structual at all)

this is seems to be one of those questions of how detailed do i want to be? and i really dont want to get carried away.

It doesnt need to be furniture quality.

I'm leaning toward sanded ply, some trim and black paint.

but we'll see.

This is mine
Started out with 2x4's and 2x6's

Then I added the 1/4" Plywood around the Stand. The Canopy is made of 3/4" Plywood.

yeah i know about the work thing, however i'm kickin some ideas around, but its still coming down to how labor intensive and how much $$$ i'll spend. i still have to figure out how to do this picture thing. (posting them) to show you what i've got so far.

yes skimmer side is staying open. i had some design things change throughout this build process (actually quite a few)

however, i like it that way, i'll have plenty of room under the stand for reactors, wine chillers and such
