Stand Teaser:) and help request:)

Scott you might need some more sand. I used 300 lbs on my tank. How deep is your sand be going to be.

Geez nice equipment line up Scott! WOW! Man I have a wedding that Saturday at 11am to go to! Sorry I would love to help. Maybe I can come by Sunday and help you get things setup as I'm sure theres lots of other things to do.

How could you possibly be having fun with all that cool stuff?

See you tomorrow night at the SCMAS meeting?

the stand is way over built, but, it still needs either horizontal supports or gussetts welded/attached in the corners to keep the legs from spreading... under the 'big one' when the water starts moving, the forces will be moving in all directions as well..

but it will need a 'really big one' and if that is the case, your stand and tank maybe the only thing standing...

but, again, you dont want the legs deflecting at all in that short distance...I would also suggest putting tabs onthe bottom of the legs, to do both, attach to the floor and to spread teh weight out from just the circumference of the posts...

again, the stand may stay upright, but it may hop/slide around in the big one

the welds and construction looks A-1

oh, and did you coordinate the layout of the plumbing to make sure it didnt conflict with any brace or steel members?

The stand has 4 x 4 heavy wall steel legs anchored to the floor a car could hit it and it would not move those posts are welded to a 6" channel no gusseting is needed. Overkill for sure, the plumbing will clear the supports no problem. I will have a plywood deck screwed down with a rubber Matt glued to the top, the tank will be plumbed with flex pvc and should do fine in a shaker. The house has a 4' bond beam running under where the tank will sit with a 8" thick slab over that. I am not worried about the stand failing and do not think it will deflect with 375 gallons on its back:)

if the posts are anchored to the floor then that will absolutely remove teh gusset/bracing issue.... the floor will act as sheer.

and yes, the stand will cover the load beyond your house... the gussets and bracing is just a 'typical' dteail that is too easy to include and removes any doubt... basically it is like getting top of the line tennis shoes, and spending all kinds of money and then getting cheap cheap shoelaces... they will work but you know someone, somewhere someone will say something...

so no worries.. like i said earlier, that stand and aquarium will be there when the rest of the house is laying all around it after the 'biggie'..

btw: did you check/anticipate the plumbing locations? is the tank bottom drilled? are you running plumbing behind it? or is it an island? I see the tile work is 360degrees...

what will the detail be for the bottom of the tank? will you covering up teh edge where the ply/rubber? or whatever it is you are putting on the bottom? or is the tile coming up little bit over the glass?

are you going to run any electrical up or inside the stand? You can put some raceways inside those uprights and notch them out right under the stand ...

Im quite anxiousd to see this.. your steel work is very impressive... and i am guessing teh rest of it will be as well...

keep us posted with lots of pics..

thanks

That stand is beefy! Congrats on the new tank. Having searched for suction cups I can rent for the past two weeks I found nothing. I did find these from Harbor Freight Tools. We used them today to lift my tank and they worked well. Granted my tank is no where near 800lbs these suction cups got the job done. Note, the suction cups are rated for 200lbs per the packaging and at $7.99 they are a steal. I was hesitant at first and would not risk my investment on a cheap product but they served there purpose today. We used them to raise the tank just enough to get our hands underneath the tank. Once on the stand we used them to position the tank exactly where we wanted it.

This thing is going to fail for sure.:lol:Havent you heard of those rare bread of metal termites. If you get those you are screwed.:blown: Scott pm me the date and time and your address I will come out to see your crazyness and help out. A skinny Irish guy works well between to buffed guys. I dont take up space.lol

The plumbing is going through the wall into a fish room on the wall side of the peninsula. No electrical underneath only 6 closed loop outlets and 3 drains that should all hide well under the main rails of the stand. The overhang will get a granite counter and a granite backsplash will go up and cover the bottom inch or two of the tank. I plan on covering the 4 steel posts with knotty Alder to match the trim and doors in the house. The tank will look like it is sitting on a large table. The top of the tank will have knotty Alder crown molding that will be a 6" tall sofit that will house and hide the 8 Sea Swirls. The lights will mount to this soft as well and will hinge up from either side. For the most part the tank will be cleaned with magnets, but the counter will support a person to walk around like a catwalk as the stand is 46" tall. I purposely made it high so I would not have to bend over to enjoy and because it will be the first 8.5 feet when you enter the house between the livingroom. Under the tank will be open to the floor, and I may put a strip of led lights below to add some accent lighting.

I am putting some notes together and plan on doing a thread in the large tank section to document my progress.

I appreciate all your offers of help and will take you all up and will firm up date and time when I hear from Ali and Lemar when the tank will be ready. The reason I am picking up the tank is because I am going to make sure my 5k tank is perfect. No scratches, bubbles, chips, Perfect.

I just hope we can get it on the stand with no issues. My front door is 42" wide so the tank will go strait in and the stand will weave in on its side. I plan on having the stand anchored and level with the deck and rubber mounted before I have you guys come over.

I will keep you all posted and thanks again:)

Most of my ideas are on a cocktail napkins, to bad they don't have a cocktail napkin to CAD converter.

Scott I'm in. Just need the location. Everything looks top notch and very much looking forward to your build thread.

I asked the engineers at work and they haven't heard of a cocktail napkin to Cad converter, but they did mention to try PDF. LoL.

Trust me, Autodesk sells that converter. LOL

The distribution of weight of the tank would have been better underneath the platform, instead of the sides of the legs (welds). Hide sight is 20/20. The welds are not under any torque to cause metal fatigue. So the welds should out live us all. ;)

I would be far more worried about the tank seams than the stand !

And please everyone, stop saying EARTHQUAKES !
