What is happening to my starfish?

The other day I noticed two weird open "wounds" on my starfish:

Then today there are three more:

The pattern of the "wounds" seems too symmetrical to be an attack. What is happening here?

Please help!

From what I'm reading it would appear your starfish may not make it.
