star fish

Get a cucumber or nassarius snails...sand sifting starfish eat the good stuff from your sand as well as the bad.

No special attention needed. They are a great addition to a cleanup crew...just make sure they are the Atlantic sand sifting type...not the filter feeder. GL, Marcye

I have an atlantic cucumber and a queen conch - my sand is looking great. I actually just added the conch a week ago and it seems that I can see a difference in the sand already. And these things eat the stuff out of the sand that I want eaten, without eating all of the little bugs and worms that are good for the tank. Give them a try.

"...Larger species of stars have generally poor success rates in our tanks. Stars such as the chocolate chip star are simply too predatory to maintain, as are the so-called sand-sifting stars. Sold to "sift sand," these latter species will devastate a live sand bed in short order. About the only larger stars that are successfully kept are species of Linckia..."

Mr. Hankey is doing great. And so is the Conch, which we have named Fritter.
LOL...
I agree with Marcye..sandsifting stars and also large sandsifting gobies such as sleepers will eat all of the beneficial infauna from your sandbed...then they slowly die of starvation.:(

When the cucumber poops out clean sand, is it in the, well, poop shape, or does it break itself up to the natural sand look?

At first it does..til the flow flattens it back out.:p

Randy, you need to resurrect Mr. Hankey and his little pile. That was truly a, um, very original photo...lol.

I have several...yellow, brown and black. I have one in each of my nanos. I think all tanks with sand beds should have at least one of these to keep the sand clean. GL:) Marcye
