star polyps in the dark?

How long can neon green star polyps stay alive without light? I have 2 spots on the rock about the size of a quarter. I want to put the rock in the dark for about 2 weeks to kill off some hair algae. This is the only rock in my 125 with hair algae.

Take it out of the tank , and scrub the area where the HA is with a stiff brush . Rinse in saltwater , and put back in tank . Ted
