starboard

I thought people got it in sections or cut it themselves, kinda like big puzzle/tile pieces? It is what some cutting boards are made of, I was going to check Bed, Bath, & Beyond before but changed my mind:rolleye1:

What are the benifits to starboard over bare bottom? ... Anyone? just curious. I have seen beautiful tanks with starboard ...I guess I am just wondering if there is a difference... Allthough When I saw HOC's home tank w/ starboard I didnt even notice it the first few times, it looked really natural...Is it just the look?

it looks better than bare glass. it reflects light back up to the corals. it spreads the weight of the rock out so it's not a whole stack resting on just a few tiny pressure-points. plus it keeps the rock from sliding around.

just make sure you silicone around the edge to seal it to the bottom. stuff gets under it and gets absolutely disgusting down there after a year or two.

rush might have a piece. he used to run it in his 120. dunno if he wants to off it or use it in the future.

That makes sense. thanks for the answer.... I remember seeing it about 4-5 times before I realized what it was and that it wasn't a sand bed...so it definetly looks good ...

I have some stuff in work, same as star board but it's smooth. I have different sizes and I think that is around 3/8" thick. I am going to be out of town next week, you can still call and ask about it but will not be able to get you some for another week. If you can remember the 2x4 sheet sjdyer has some in his fish room.

That's crazy, I checked them right after I posted to make sure they'd work. I'll find them later tonight we are going out to eat, I'm starvin! OK I found it faster than I thought. Type POLYPROPYLENE SHEET in the search on MSC's site. If this link works you can just enter the size you need and check the price on different thickness's.

The links you posted earlier may have expired after a certain tme limit, but thanks for the quick response - the search worked fine, as does the current link.

Thanks again ...

what silicone do you use, and should it be placed on the of the star board to stick it too the glass. and how long should i wait too add water back in tank

I think that you place the silicone around the edges, you can use aquarium grade silicone and most silicone is touch dry in about a hour or two and then is cured in 24hrs. Placing the silicone around edge stops a build up of sea crapp getting under the board.
Thats my guess.
