Starfire Glass

I'd like some general feedback from those of you who have starfire glass.

Is it worth a couple hundred bucks to have the upgrade?

I haven't seen a tank with starfire glass, so if someone could post a picture of their tank it might help me decide.

Thanks in advance.

If you've seen an acrylic tank it's pretty much the same.

If you've got the extra cash Starfire would be nice.

You can go to Aquatic Treasures and see a piece of Starfire and regular glass sitting next to eachother. Velko had them sitting on the counter. Quite the difference.

The one at Aquatic Treasures says Low Iron.. I think it is the same thing as Starfire.. I don't think they can call it starfire because that is a Name that one tank makers have named it (a copy right thing), but I could be wrong on that.

And there is a big difference between normal Glass and the Low Iron.

Starphire is a clear glass made by PPG. They were only making it up to 1/2" thickness when I got my two big tanks built, so I would have had to do two pieces back to back which has a lot of issues.

The other glass types are not quite as clear as starphire and more prone to scratching. These are low iron glasses that come with the name ??can't remember:lol:

Also, PPG was supposed to start manufacturing the 3/4" again, but I am not sure if they have yet or not.

I belive starphire glass is totally iron free. as the other glasses are low iron. that is what my niebor the glass guru says.

Nanook,

so the low iron or starfire is also more scratch resistant?

Thats a big selling point right there, if its more clear also I might "have" to go with it!

Lon, anyway to quantify "a big difference?"

I'm not sure about the Glass scratching easier. But if you want to check it out run up to Aquatic Treasures. I do not have the Low Iron, and I think my tank looks great.. But after seeing the two side by side my next tank will be Low Iron.

Thanks reggae fish!

I'm not priviledged enough to use the search function.

I'm looking at a 60" x 30" x 24", which I think is a 195gal?

The quote has the glass thickness listed at 12mm.

I'll have to verify the low iron or starfire option.

If you're doing something that large and it's only a couple hundred bucks, I'd do it personally. Might be the cheapest thing you're going to add to your tank from here on out

Your pm is returned.

That is close to the tank Stupidsreef is picking up sunday but his will be 60"x36"x24" He should have picture of it up Sunday night. It is not Low Iron though. We tried to change it but they made the tank earlier than what he thought.

Where you looking to buy the tank?

It was $175 more to make the 3 panes thats the front & both sides the Low Iron. But they cut my tank out early and I couldn't get it done, I tried. @ that price you can't pass it up. My tank is from Glasscages.com

i was thinking of getting it from AO, but we might be moving to a new house w/ a lot more room and many more tank options!!!!!

We have looked for months trying to find a new house and finally gave up. I decided on the tank I wanted and where to get it, then we found a house this weekend.
