hey guys. my starfish i noticed lost a limb. i'm not really sure how. then i decided to clean the tank in which a rock fell. im not sure if it his limb was caught under it but he now has two limbs that were cut off. before (although shy) had limbs all over from withing the caves and rocks. after this he seemed scrunched up which not as much movement. is he in shock? will he make it?

it is true, you defintely get an attachment to these pets. i feel bad for him.

any info appreciated.

thanks

Star fish dropping limbs spontaneously is typically a sign that they're on their way out either due to osmotic shock or starvation. Once they reach that point they rarely recover.

damnit. i hope this was jsut a bad chain of events and he recovers...guess time will tell.

for the record if he doens't make it, should i try to find him and get it outa the tank (if possible at all?)

is your skimmer going wack. i normally dont see my star for days at a time, what kind of star are we talking about, i got a sand sifting one thats my i hardly see em

i dont know what kind he is. he has super skinny and long arms. id say he's about 10" and i wouldnt see him much only the arms coming out and gathering food from the water. i guess you could say he looks like a super skinny hairy starfish hehe.

i think what you are talking about is a brittle starfish, they are are nocturnal and mostly hide in rockwork so that could explane why you havent seen him. but you got to also keep in mind that lost arms will regenerate over time, but be on the look out for him

If it is a brittle star fish I doubt he is on the way out but starving nonethe less, some times they eat themselves.
Look for it specially at night and try feeding it some pieces of shrimp or scallop.
