stars showing up???

I have a live rock tank that's been up a little over a year. About 3 weeks ago I came in one evening and saw something new on the front glass. It was about 1/4" to 3/8" in size, appeared to be a star, and had 6 appendages. A day or two later I saw another that appeared to have 3, and maybe more developing. Then a few days later one that had 5 distinct legs. What's up? Are they coming from the rock? Why a year? Why do some have more legs than others?

they're probably asterinas , the leg thing is how they multiply, they drop off a leg which grows into a new star, most are harmless algae but there are reports of a coral munching type

Well they actually split to reproduce. have you added any corals or anything lately? I know mine mostly only come out at night, maybe you just had one and it's taken awhile to split enough to be seen.

I saw 2 at one time, the first two I mentioned. I had seen both individually, and then once the 2 at the same time. It was a few days later that I saw the one with 5 legs. It possible is one of the first two.

I am more curious why I haven't seen them before now. I had not added anything to the tank since late June. At that time I added a yellow watchman gobi and a nice sized star polyp. Both are healthy and happy. I guess the polyp could have introduced the stars???

Any input appreciated.
