Start up cost

I should also add, in the picks I have glass heaters. I have since upgraded to cobalt neo-therm. They are flat and black, so they disappear in the background.

I just bought one after reading your post and seeing the reviews. I currently have a Fluval E 200-Watt Electronic and have no complaints but its getting a little old, so...this looks like a good heater.

Best heater I've ever owned. Obviously there's no such thing as perfect, but these definitely come close.

Especially after cobalt redesigned the internal components in 2014.

They are sleek, easy to use, and dead-on accurate.

Most expensive one I've ever owned. :) lol
(here in Canada we pay approx 25% more due to the current strength of the American dollar...darn you guys and your strong currency! Tell Obama he's doing too good of a job!)
Price online here is $89.95 + tax = $102.00 .... BUT considering how important a reliable heater is to all of us, cheaping out on a heater is not a very good idea.
Thx for the tip Levi!

Endless amounts of $100 here and there...and that's after the first drop of water (RODI of course..$200 )...tank and initial setup aside...I'm super new to the hobby and have found that if you want low maintenance and "do it right attitude" it gets pricey really quick...but HAVE found if you take all these Reef Central advices and USE them...and sometimes re-research them...it still ain't cheap :) ...trying to be a good reefer so far has been quite the expense...but let's keep trucking!!!

Hey Levi...I just found this thread. Whats your opinion?

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2376715

After reading that, I am somewhat hesitant to put it in my aquarium even though Cobalt claims it has been re-designed.
As I stated in a previous post,, cobalt redesigned the internal components after many hobbyists had this happen to them. As a company, they really took care of their customers in that issue.

Here is a video that explains that whole ordeal

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...1HCr5I0U7_HkdodyA&sig2=qFn37IdNQSnTQT-8j2G0KA

They have since created a near perfect product, far superior to anything else on the market. They owned up to their mistake.

So basically, unless you somehow get a 3 year old unit (very very unlikely) you will have one of the new units which is like a tank. The only place that you may get an old unit is from liquidation websites, and low volume lfs.

No worries man, cobalt is a great company and they take good care of people.

Please watch the whole video, it's well worth it.

A basic System for folr relying on water changes can be done for almost the same cost as a tropical f/w. + on going cost of saltwater (i live near the southern ocean Australia so its free)

90g with all the trimings 2nd hand 2k? 3? +stock

new 4 to 8 highend +stock

I do like the cobalts for both look and accuracy but they are a bit out of my price range.

I'm not trying to sound harsh. Going with a cheaper heater could end up costing you thousands in fish and corals. I have titanium heaters and a Ranco temperature controller, that's close to 200.00 there. There are things you can save money on and be just fine. The heater is not something you can go cheap on in my honest opinion. That mentality will set you up for failure.

Only thing I'd say is, don't go cheap. In this hobby, the statement "you get what you paid for" is very true. It's better to get good equipment the first time. Or you'll end up spending more down the road.

I agree, a heater will be one of the biggest risk factors in your tank, next to the plumbing and structural integrity of the tank itself.

When they fail, it's usually because the diodes fuse together, and that means it gets stuck in the on position. So while you're at work, it could cook your entire tank.

Eheim makes some pretty darn good heaters, but they are equally as expensive as the cobalt, and they aren't as accurate, and they look like any other tube heater. Best hidden in the sump.

Hey, so this is not the right place to post this but i just watched an episode of the tv show tanked. The worst thing that i saw was that they setup and stocked the tank in one day! And they put an emperor anglefish in a 3 ft tank.

The show is fake, to an extent. 90% of the tanks they build get taken down the following day.

Most of them feature fake corals, fake live rock, and they use natural seawater to fill the tank, so no cycling needed.

Yeah, it's a cool show to see neat tank designs, but beyond that, whatever they show is Hollywood trickery.

I should know, I work on a tv show for a living lol.

I should also add, the people why purchase these tanks, also purchase their maintenance regime. So once a week, someone comes in and cleans and maintains everything for them.

It's good in the aspect that it gets people into reefing, but it's sad that people have no idea how much work actually goes into it

I saw something once that you drop 2k on a tv and no one even looks, you drop 2k on a tank setup and everyone flips s***

Anyone know what im talking about, I think it was a meme.

I saw something once, it said

"If you thought investing in a project car was a rabbit hole of money,, trying owning a saltwater tank"

Yep, the secret is out, saltwater tanks are in fact expensive as balls.

But,,,

You are creating an ocean in your den. Not just a freshwater puddle, but an actual saltwater ecosystem.

That in itself is dam impressive
