Starter coral

Hello reef central, Well I wanna get into reefing, and would wanna know what's some good starter corals. I recently purchased a 5lb rock with GSP on it. Growing so quick! I have a 48" tek-light setup. Thanks in advance!

Hi Patrick. Usually anything soft is pretty easy and forgiving. My first coral was a mushroom rock with some brown palys on it. I bought from Petco about 6 or 7 years ago its lived through 3 tank moves and a heater failure where the tank got down to 62 degrees. So needless to say mushrooms and "most" zoas and palys are good starter corals. Also xenia is pretty easy also but it can be touchy sometimes. I've had some xenia just melt for no apparent reason. If your ever in the santa rosa I have a small rock with some mushrooms on it you can have.

Hey Patrick, new to reefing myself, just started a 29g a few months ago. I started with some pompom and pulsing xenias and a few zoanthids. If your going to be running T5s you'll probably be looking at mostly softies and LPS like myself. Once that stuff seemed to be doing well I put in some trumpet/candy coral, frogspawn and a few other LPS that seem to be easy to come by. If your anywhere near Rohnert Park my pompom has gotten quite large since I've had it and could use a trim. Love the GSP myself looks great under a gentle current

I'm actually closer to American canyon :) thank you all for the help tho! How quick does a gsp grow and will the corals u guys mentioned grow well under my lighting fixture?

Yeah they will grow under that fixture if its a 4 bulb fixture. But watch out if its a 6 or 8 bulb fixture you could fry them if you place them too high. Hth

Justin remind me Saturday to give you a piece of neon green toadstool. it's a nice softy and easy to keep.

I will do just that thank ya kindly sir :D I have a 2 polyp frag of some lunar eclipse palys that I will bring if you or anyone else would like. I just got a small colony today with 25 heads on it so I can frag out a couple more once spreads out.

I used to have a TEK fixture and LOVED it! I upgraded the bulbs with 2 ATI Blue Plus, 1 KZ Fiji Purple and 1 Aquablue Special. It made the colors on the corals fluorescent a lot more. I highly recommend swapping out your bulbs in the future to the combo i just listed. It really does make a big difference.
