I have owned saltwater tanks before but have only done so in a biocube. I want to start with a blank canvas using a 50 gallon tank. I would like to know all the things I need to do this. I wanting a reef tank with fish. I know the live rock saltwater and lights are a must but I don't know anything about dumps or skimmers. Any advice will help thank you in advance. :spin1:

I run a 70g with no sump so not required, but I use a skimmer as it pulls a lot of crap from the water column thus reduces water changes. I use a double screened layered deep sand bed, total of 6 inches, a simple aqua clear mechanical filter and two opposing power heads for water movement. I try to keep it as simple as possible.

As stated by mcgyvr.... sumps and skimmers are not required, but can be an aid to help with filtration and the sort, as your live rock handles the main bulk of the filtration. Its all up to you where you want to go with this... HAPPY REEFING!

A small refugium (hang on works to) is a great place for malco algaes and coepods/amphipods. Both of these help to clean the water and can be a additional food source for fish/corals.
