Starting a Seahorse Tank

Hey everyone,

I'm considering starting a seahorse tank, hopefully using stuff I already have from my reef tank. I'm thinking of using a 29 gallon tank with an AC110 filter, converted into a refugium on the lowest flow setting. Substrate will be crushed coral, probably about 5" deep (I have enough to practically fill the tank, so I can go any depth), seeded from my reef tank. I'll use about 30lb of live rock, and keep live macro (various caulerpas, halimeda) in the main tank and 'fuge. Lighting will either be NO, dual bulb (2 x 20) or PC (around 60w total), with a seperate 'fuge light w/ reverse light cycle.

I plan to keep seahorses and/or pipefish, but I haven't really researched the various species yet. I'd also like to keep a jawfish or similar burrowing fish. Some mushrooms and/or zoas will most likely go in too.

Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
RM

So far you are on the right track. Everything listed is compatible with seahorses. A jawfish will like 5" of crushed coral for burrowing.

Some people have concerns about detritus accumulation in crushed coral, but I have not opinion one way or the other.
