starting over again

I don't see a problem with a simple set up. All those fancy gadgets that people buy are not 100% necessary. They just make maintenance easier. A local pet store had a 10 gallon tank with only an undergravel filter, housing mushroom and xenias. The tank was up and running for over 12 years, never crashed. However they did do frequent water changes to the tank. The equipment we buy is to keep the water quality high without having to change the water on a daily basis. One thing that people should take into account is bioload, and how tolerant the animals you house are to nutrients. Tanks housing some critters do not need to be as "filtered" as others. As for tap water, some cities have much higher quality water than others, I personally would use RO.

well my wife decided to suprise me 3 week ago with a brand new 1-1.5in blue tang she put into the tank. well everything got ick and killed the clown, yellow gobie, angle, and the tang.

Man, how terrible did she feel after that? Ouch.

Hi, New here but thought I'd chime in...I think it is a great idea to go back to the basics. I used to work for a LR Aqua-Culturing company in central FL. We were able to run the tanks on the bare minimum, meaning small sumps, skimmers, and work...

The Rock we used was solid Calcium Carbonate, we still had to add reef builder and calcium to get sustainable growth. RO-DI was a standard down there, the pet shops even sold it. I see no issue with the RO-DI, it's a lot better than blowing up reefs around the world for substandard LR.

I had non-reef marine tanks up here before I moved to FL. the fish did OK but I could never get the Inverts to do to well, May have been the copper pipes? To set up an environmentally responsible tank is a great Idea, but is it irresponsible to limit thrivability by not using technology? Sorry for the long first post... Michael

Why would it limit thrivability? my corals are extremely healthy ( kenya tree dropping babies every 4-5 days), along with the fish which are fed for a couple of days in a row then a day off of feeding. i really need more rock, especially rubble, but it would all go into the fuge for more places for critters to live.

not good, but my son is autistic and really wanted a blue tang, so i found someone getting rid of theirs that is small and he helps me keep the macro under control. i'll get rid of it when it gets bigger.

From the limited texts I've read & word of mouth I've heard, autistic pretty much means that underneath his child-like exterior behavior he's 2 inches away from being a genious.

Do I have it all wrong? Is it not "under cover brilliance hiding behind confusion"?

i have never heard that before but i like it. his autism is very mild but it is hard for him to communicate without a little stuttering or repeating of words and he is easily distracted unless it is something he really likes then you can't get him away from it.
