Hi. I'm not exactly new to the hobby, but my information is out of date or forgotten.

Basically I graduated high school in 1993 and immediately purchased a 20 gallon ******* with an integrated wet/dry using graduation money. After college I got a used 75 gallon oceanic reef ready with a big wet dry and a Venturi protein skimmer. I had 4 120w vho lights on the thing. It went pretty well for a while until I moved to a new city. The tap water...yes, I know...was worse in the new city and the livestock was half the selection and twice the price. I eventually got rid of the 75 gallon, stored the 20 gallon, and took up diving. Hence the username.

I got back into the hobby with the 20 gallon after a divorce and now am ready to move into a new house and get a nice size tank in the 80-150 gallon range. I would like to transfer the contents of the 20 gallon into the big tank but I'm not sure how long it would take. The 20 gallon has softies and lps in it and seems to do just fine except for some zoas. Rastas and candy apples died while sunny d and rainbow hornets are thriving. Acans, torch, hammer, and scoly are fine.

How do I go about transferring the contents of the small tank that is fully cycled into a big tank. Can I just transfer rocks and sand and slowly add more rocks and sand? Is this a better question for my local fish store? They are marine only.

I would first add the additional rock you will need in the new tank, fill it with saltwater and cycle the new tank. After the cycle it will be completely safe to transfer over your livestock and rocks from the old 20 gallon system. Alternately you could use dry sand and dry rock in the new tank and move all the livestock over at the start, but there is a real risk of a new cycle which would kill your livestock if you take that approach. There usually isn't another cycle, but there certainly is a chance.
