Starting slowwwly

We picked up a brand new 215 from a great guy in Arkansas this weekend and I have the frame built for my DIY stand, will skin it next week. My question is simple but very ugly when asked on the DSB thread. The equipment I am going to buy depends upon the manner in which I set up my system. I will have the DT with an inch of sand for display only, a refugium, a mangrove tank (mainly for display, not fiiltration), a small algae scrubber for fun and a remote DSB with LR. Simply put, would you do a RDSB or is it even neccessary?

How deep of a sand bed are you talking about ? The problem with this question is that a lot of people have opinions that may differ from others.

I have a similar set up and it seems to be working just fine but I’m only 8 months in. I have a 300 gallon DT with a 75(I think)gallon refugium that has a 6” sand bed, full of live rock and various algae.

Go at least 6-8" on that RDSB.

We've had several members in the club utilize a RDSB as part of their systems. Maybe someone will chime in here.

I think a DSB is necessary - don't know that you can sustain enough anaerobic bacteria in the rock alone.

I agree 100%.

If I utilize a 4-6 inch depth, what kind of water flow do you all suggest. When I had my old tank the DSB was on the DT, so this wil be new (and exciting) to me. With any luck the entire system will have around 400+ gallons of water through the system.

Thanks for the replies, hopefully we can make a meeting very soon.

I have three overflow drains in my tank. Two go directly to the sump. The other one goes to the refuigum first then the sump. Not sure how many gallons go thru it a hr. You are more than welcome to come by my house and look at my setup. It might help your decision process.

Marlin if you have a chance to take sooner 7 (kevin) up on his offer of checking out his tank it would be a great way to see what you are talking about in action!!
Gotta say it is one of my fave tanks in the state (no joking!!).
Kevin has done a lot of thinking on the design of his tank and in my humble opinion it has payed off !!

Let me know how the FSU fans treat you. They were very impressed with how they were treated last year. So much so that a lot of them wrote into the local paper. From what I’ve been told FSU has a reputation of treating away fans pretty bad. Nothing like LSU but in the neighborhood.

For the wife and I it should be a last since we are attending a wedding for a buddy that is from Destin. From fishing with him over the last decade I have made a lot of FSU friends, thus we are actually hanging with about 15 of them in their donor area. Then tailgating for the rest of the night after the game. But will advise when we get back.

Just getting back in the groove after the OU/ FSU game. Sooner7, the fans treated us quite well, except for a few drunks, on both sides I must add. Most of them said that when teams like OU, Alabama and the likes come there they are more civil. When Florida, Miami and LSU...... well you know. They were so excited just to be back in the hunt, plus I was wearing my Lee Roy Selmon jersey and that kind of brought a lot of us together since there were so many Tampa Buc's fans

On another note, I started skinning my DIY stand last night and it is coming along nicely. To any that try it, just go slow, think things through and level, level, level. I think by DIY there is more of a sense of pride, especially since I am a plumber, not a carpenter. With any luck I will have it done by the weekend and stain it next week.

Sooner7, once Missouri, Ball State and Texas weekends are done I may hit you up for a view of your system.

Take care everyone.

Building a level stand is one thing. Getting it level on the floor seems to be the biggest pain, or at least that’s been my experience.

Wish I was at the game. Looked like that place was rocking all night.

Come by anytime…. So far everything is looking good….. Couldn’t be happier with the progress.
