Has anyone ever tried one of the "truck bed" spray on materials, say like a Rhino Liner to protect your welded steel stand. Im at that stage now, Ive seen several threads about powder coating vs. painting etc. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I was wondering the same thing. I would figure the bed liner spray would be the better option. Any idea on what it would cost to spray with rhino or line-x?
Just want to weigh in that my tank builder also suggested that I get the stand sprayed with bed liner as an alterative to powder coating, and its slightly cheaper. From what I've heard its durable and forgiving.
I did end up going with powdercoating myself but that is mainly because I like the look.
my research has found "herculiner". a diy bedliner for pickups or whatever. $30 a gallon. can be rolled, brushed or sprayed. looks like the ticket to me. from a cost / durability stand point and it is easily repairable if it gets gouged. supposed to be "flexible" and easily bonds to itself if you need to repair it.
I used herculiner for my stand. Worked great. Very easy to roll onto the stand. I think that I ended up doing 2 coats. Just be cautious with it. Whatever you get it on, it stays on like garage floor, skin, etc.
I bought the 1 gallon kit with the roller. Total cost - $90
I wanted something that would last 30 years with no corrosion issues (hopefully I'll last that long....), and something that would be impervious to the high humidity generated by the sump, so I went Line-X, I'm sure any polyurethane bed liner would be equivalent, chips are a non issue if you go this route, powder coatings are durable, but not nearly this durable. We picked it up last week to deliver to the stainless fabricator to make the outer skin.
I am getting ready to coat my steel stand for a 520 I am getting ready to set up. I have some calls into spray on liner dealers for pricing but also considering the DIY herculiner. Seems like it would be a much cheaper alternative.
I was going to use Line-X and do it myself. With a spary-on liner it ends up costing a lot more for the wasted material (only spraying a skinny bar) and the labor.
The stand is currently powdercoated. It has a few small spots of rust and that is why I am going to redo it.
Do you think the powder coating needs to be removed completely or can I hit it with a grinder and scratch it real well then apply the liner over the powder coating? From what I have read these liners stay on anything they touch....
