Steel Stand Recommendation

Ah Invinc...purchase a mig machine, aka wire welder and give it a try! Start off with some small projects like a welding table and then give your stand a shot.

too risky. I may weld my fingers together. ;)

Welding is alot easier than you may think. When welding tube stock it is just a matter of getting your wire speed set right with your temp/volt setting to match your welding speed. You have to ensure you get good penetration with the weld.

I have a millermatic 251. It is a great welder. A bit expensive but when you use it often, it is well worth it. I would find a machine/Metal Job shop in your area. They will be able to take care of it for you. Make sure you engineer the stand so you dont over build it to much. I have a friend that spent a ton of money and used way to thick stock for his setup.

Carman34L hit it on the nail, the welding isn't difficult, its all the prep work that takes time, the cutting and grinding, making sure everything is flush, level and square. Making the actual welds is easy though. Check out one of the metal yards in Houston, Im sure a few will do fabrication for you, or know of a guy looking to make some extra bucks.

It costed me about $1,200 to get started with equipment for welding basic projects, a lincon mig machine, a rigid chop saw, a rigid drill press, and a couple hand grinders, plus an electric welding helmet.

But I saved a ton building my DIY huge parrot cage instead of purchasing one, saved enough to have a whole pike of new tools. I even have been tinkering around with fabricating some steel pump bases with the scrap metal around the house.
