Is this the aquarium that some of the BAR members went to recently? I'm interested in going for a visit, but on the website it says something about the academy being closed until 2008? Does that include the Steinhart?

Also I read somewhere that they have NSW that we can get? I know at UCSB we were able to get free NSW (and it was fantastic to boot), hopefully something similar?
 
If you have the time, swing by today, 1st Wednesday of the month is freeday (yes its free.. just have to deal with all the additional kiddies).

The academy is closed until 2008 but that's the one in GG park, the aquarium part of it has temporarily moved to Howard St. (should say the exact address).

And no NSW, there USED to be that back in the day WAYYYYYYYYY back in the day, but not anymore, perhaps they'll start up again when they get the newplace done since they'll be pumping *& filtering straight from the ocean.
 
They use IO salt, and supplement with Mg.

What, no buckets?? :)

Mr. Ugly, are these pics from the Old GG Park, the current location (by Moscone) or the new yet-to-be-opened Steinhart?
 
Who is the General Contractor working on the new facility. I know a lot of the Bay Area contractors, maybe I can sneek a visit.
 
You don't need to know who's the contractor just go to the park they don't even have the walls up you can see everything they're building now :)
 
I am more interested in when they are farther along in the project. I work for a Commercial Contractor and this junk interests us. I live for excavating, shoring, concrete, steel, mechanical and drywall between the hours of 6am and 8 pm. I spend the rest of the time thinking about corals, booze and gals. May or Maynot be in that order.

Anyways, if it is a general contractor I have a relationship with I can get a good look at the place later when there is something to see besides dirt. I do dream of dirt however.
 
Well they're growing out frags now. But being as they are an educational institution don't EVER expect to be able to get frags of their corals.

doubt they'd sell frags =/
 
is this going to be their permanant location now? I was there a couple years ago and was pretty disappointment.

Good god no! It's only a temporary location while the academy of sciences at it's old location in Golden Gate park gets rebuilt (they were retrofiting, but it got to the point where it was easier to level the whole thing and start over, not to mention enough donations came in to cover the cost).

What you saw at Howard was simply a building that they managed to get a REALLY good price on since it was being built for a dot-com place before the bubble burst, didn't get finished until after. What they're building at the new place is not a 20,000 gallon 2 story tall tank, they're going to build a 220,000 gallon 2-story tall tank (will be the largest live reef in the world... in an aquarium that is). A lot of what you see at the Howard St. location, is in reality temporary storage and learning (the 20k gallon tank is to get a good idea of how to effectively light corals with a tank of that depth).

Not to mention the GG park place will be more than just the aquarium, if you ever went to the old place they had space & science exhibits, earthquake exhibits, african safari, gems, etc it was an "Academy of Sciences" not just Aquarium.

Darn it, free day should be on a weekend.

No way! It's crowded enough as it is with every school in the universe using it to get a free day. Problem though is my job has recently changed to include a long Wednesday so I'm out too :( Except during the summer :)

That's what I thought too but man it's been forever. Any idea when the GG one is going to re open?
