Steps to taking a good picture...

Can anyone help me?
I have what I think is a beautiful reef. I am proud of it and would like to be able to share some pictures online. The only problem is that I am not that happy with the pictures I take. I have a Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH camera. I am having trouble getting as focused as I would like and also getting the color that I want.
Anybody got any advice. I see some beautiful pictures on this thread so somebody must know.
