Sterilizing water with Bleach

Ok, so rather than NUKE 6-10 gallons of water every time I want sterile water for the mandarin eggs, I was thinking I could just bleach it. The big question though:

How much bleach to use, and how much Prime to remove it?!

equal amounts of bleach/sodium thiosulfate. It does not matter how much as long as it is equal. I use 1ml/gal. of both. 5.25% sodium hypochlorite can be used with regular chlorine remover that is used at 1 drop/gal.

You can use granular pool chlorine , the same way, just that the sodium thiosulfate has to be in the form of crystals to be able to measure it.

So basically 6 ML standard household bleach followed up with 6ML prime. I think I can handle that, and since spawning is 10-12 hours away this evening, I'm gonna do it now!

I never used prime I am cheap as a 5 dollar....

I use the basic chorine remover i make myself, 1 drop/gal. Extra chlorine remover will not hurt.

LOL, Prime isn't all THAT expensive if purchased online...of course you're probably dealing with A LOT more water than I am.

For benefit of others I get this from National Fish Pharm, 4 oz. of sodium thiosulfate crystals for about $8, makes one gallon and then one drop per gal. i think a gal. is about 75,000 drops.

The best and cheapest way is to make your own chlorine neutralizer by dissolving in one L of distilled water the same amount of sodium thiosulphate as the grams/L of chlorine your bleach has.Then you only have to the same volumes of bleach and neutralizer.I use 1ml of bleach and 1ml of neutralizer,/gal.same as Ed,but you can use more if you like as far as you match both chemicals.
I´m not sure that was clear.My bleach has 55gram/l of Chlorine.So I make a solution of 55 gram of sodium thio.per liter of distilled water.
I´m not sure if commercial neutralizers state how much product they contain...

I do as Luis does on a smaller scale:
6 grams of sodium thiosulphate in 100 ml RODI water. If you use 2 ml bleach, dechlorinate with 2 ml of the thiosulphate solution. Never had a problem with chlorine.

once I had a problem with chloramX going bad and killing the rotifers. I don't make it up ahead of time anymore, but dissolve what I want to use just before using it. I use it to remove ammonia mostly, and use the thiosulphate to counteract chlorine when I use bleach to sterilize water for phyto or larvae etc.

It is lots easier than microwaving, and doesn't shrink the soda bottles, either.

Got to walmart, to the pool section and buy some OTO (cholrine test kit) that will tell you if you have bleach in the water. you need to hit 20-30ppm for 30-60 minutes to do a good job killing things. Your pH will be low when you declorinate, so you'll need to rebuffer.

Hydrogen peroxide solutions will leave you with sterile water... and are not too damaging to tissue as-long as you let it evaporate for a bit... and don't use too high of concentrations.

I forget what I've used for concentrations...

Andy, I gave it a check, it's at 8.1 as of 1 hour and 15 minutes post dechlorination.

I've never noticed the pH thing.

I never checked it though.Perhaps because of that they add alkalis when decapping bs with chlorine.
