Hi everyone,

We are totally new to salt water aquariums and have decided to set up a 6 x 2 x 2 tank. We are from Brisbane, Australia and we have had the tank and stand made by Gary Maher (through Fish Tales in Greenbank) and bought all of our equipment through Ben at Age of Aquariums in Browns Plains.

We have aquascaped our rock and have appreciated all the help so far from other members. We have constructed and attached our light rack and are now at the point of filling the tank with RODI water that we are making (what a slow process!). We have gone down the path of no live rock or sand to avoid introducing any nasties from the beginning.

Being new to this hobby, we would appreciate any help and advice we could get.

You're going to want to have some kind of water change system as well with holding tanks

I also highly recommend a controller like the Neptune Systems Apex or similar.

I bought the same skimmer, Tunze 9410 for my 180 build as well. Let me know how it works out. I heard they are tricky to dial in, but when they get going do a great job. I have a few more months till mine gets wet.

Looks very nice, best of luck.

Very sleek and nice looking build. Off topic but, Is that a cookoo clock and are they common "down under"?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your comments.

Muttley000 - no it's a dutch clock and not common in Aus.

Tank is now filled and running. Have added salt and bacteria to tank. Miracle Mud also added this afternoon. We have also now set up the auto top-up and skimmer. Wave maker (MP40) is running at one end.

Will post another update soon. Some pics below of progress.

Salt going into tank

Miracle Mud set up with skimmer running

Still working out our camera settings with shimmering water and lights

Looks nice and clean for now, how to get some pieces of liverock to "seed" the tank?!
I love it when the little shrimps and crabs are sneaking out in a new system.

I use Fifjimud and maintain about 4-5 inch in the middle section of the refugium.
I somehow like the dosed mud idea in little containers.

Hi Marty,

A few more pictures of the light rack that we made. It's made out of aluminium box section and plastic joiners.
