Still around

I am still around, sorry for the lack of involvment. Tank is doing great, and my 24 gallon mantis tank has become really entertaining.

Reason for lack of involvement: I adopted a retired greyhound, and so it took me about six months to get her to where she needed to be.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Alan

:wavehand:

Nice of you to give the greyhound a good home:)

We need pics....of the tanks and the dog:D

It is incredible. They have got to be the most well mannered dogs there are. And to top it all off you are getting a very athletic dog that is very well bred and tends to not have any hereditary problems. She is not interested in my fish tanks, I thought for sure she would notice them.

beautiful greyhound, i grew up in omaha and the racetrack there adopted out the greyhounds after their careers were over. they were usually around 3-4 years old. our family adopted one and it was a gorgeous dog. i entertained the idea of getting one for me and lauren but i didnt think it would be fair to the dog to live in a 1000 sq. ft. apartment. good luck with the dog, im sure it will make you and youre family happy!<~~~steve

Steve, you would be suprised how many Greyhounds are adopted to apartment dwellers. They do really well as long as you are willing to walk them for about 30 minutes a day. 15 in the morning and 15 at night is enough.

Its odd, I always thought that Greyhounds could only be happy if they were running, but as it turns out they are really just big couch potatoes. I let Hpe run at Edwin Warner, but to be honest I dont think she cares as long as she gets attention from someone in the family.

I grew up in West Memphis (Southland Greyhound Park), and always wanted to work with the dogs out there. But since it was a gambling operation, Mom and Dad wouldn't allow it. Looking back now, it's probably better. I'm not sure that I would have wanted to see what goes on out there.

Don't get me wrong, I have heard the dogs are treated like royalty....at least the active dogs are.

Not likely to be an issue, but I feel compelled to throw it out there - a friend's father adopted a retired racing greyhound who LOVES to eat disposable razors. Yes, the whole thing, razor, plastic handle, moisturizer strip!

Twice they've had to have him operated on - the second time he chewed through a child safety latch to get to the trash can and dig out the razor. He's come out smelling like roses both times, but scared the crap out of the owners none the less. Their vet said that it was the second greyhound he had seen for the same reason of eating disposable razors.

No idea if that's totally random or if it's some oddball quirk of the breed, but I figured I'd let you know!

That is strange. Eating razors. Wow. I have trained our Grey pretty well and she tends to only fool with things that are hers. I used a book called "The dog listener" to train her. It is amazing if you ever have a need to train a dog. It works so well that my 10 year old Italian Greyhound, and my 4 year old MalteePoo also lost their bad habits. Its all based on building a pack structure in the house.

I've heard of that. Emphasizing who is boss, etc. I think I'll get that this week.
We rescued a black lab a month ago. Awesome dog, wonderful personality, great with the 9 yr old....but she's getting BIG.
We need to instill obedience quickly. She's a quick learner, but I admit, I need to learn how to train her.

Is this it?

Thats the one. It is a great book. The writing style is very good. She tells stories of trouble dogs that she solved the problems with, and explains why the technique she used worked. It really emphasizes the technique. You wont believe how easy it is. Some of it is strange, but just do exatly what she suggests, and it will work like a charm.
