Still hear the tapping/clicking HELP:

:furious: OK so I thought I had determined that I had a mantis shrimp that hitchhiked on my rock that I got from my friend who owns a LFS. After the addition of 2 Yellow Tangs and 1 Yellow Coris Wrasse, all of which disappeared, I was confident that something was in my tank and killing my fish. However my Lawnmower Blenny and 2 Zebra Gobies are still alive and well. Anyway, the other weekend, I finally had some spare time and decided to take all my live rock out and find the culprit. I needed to do a water change on my tank anyway, so I decided to just drain the water into a bin that I had then take out each piece of rock and inspect it using a flashlight to look into all the holes I could find. After a long process I never found the shrimp or anything else unusual. I was so frustrated after this long process and coming up short. So I decided that I would put my rock back into my tank but to not rest any of the rock along the sides of my tank. That way, if I hear the tapping/clicking (which sounds like it was tapping on the tank itself) I can see all around the tank to see what is causing this tapping/clicking noise. The past few days I have heard the tapping/clicking sound. I have gotten off of my couch and stood at the tank looking on the sides and the back of the tank, only to see nothing. Yesterday, I was just standing in front of my tank just looking at it, and I heard the tapping/clicking sound. As I was looking around the tank, I would hear the tapping/clicking sound, but never saw anything. I am at a complete loss here. I have no idea what to do. I do not want to go get more fish for them to just be killed. But maybe it was something else. Maybe all 3 of the fish that disappeared, all died from stress or something that had nothing to do with another fish/shrimp/or whatever. Then after they dies behind the rocks, my cleanup crew came in and "cleaned up the mess". Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. I have tried everything to try and catch the supposed mantis shrimp, nothing has worked.

^^ Pistols also click, and are really only known to attack stuff nosing into their den. It would be nearly unheard of for a tang to get whacked by a pistol. If it is a mantis, you should be able to at least get it to poke its head out with some shrimp on a skewer held near the rock (if you can narrow it down to an area). Then there are lots of trapping options. Try here:

If it's a pistol shrimp, and it is killing my bright colored fish, why would I not worry about it? I don't want to keep buying fish only for them to be killed by this hitchhiker.

I seriously doubt the pistol shrimp (if that's what it is) had anything to do with the loss of your fish.
17 years ago I bought 250 pounds of live rock down in the Keys and the rocks were loaded with pistol shrimp and I never lost a fish to them.

I am just at a loss. I started to think maybe it is my heater clicking on or something? A snail moving around or something. UGH! I have no idea where it would be. I thought that if it was a Mantis I would have seen him by now. I have never seen him or anything for that matter. I have set all kinds of traps, where I thought it might be, and nothing. I am going to go buy another Yellow Coris Wrasse and see what happens. They are fairly inexpensive and look really good in my tank (well it did for the one and only day I had it in there before it disappeared

Oh ok, I don't know too much about pistol shrimp, other than what I have been told. I just can't understand why 3 bright yellow fish disappeared in my tank. very frustrating.

could it be your powerheads, mine tripped me out like that once . i had no clue until my wave maker switched it off

You might be able to eliminate the equipment by unplugging one item at a time and see if the clicking stops....At least you will know that it is something in the tank instead of any of the equipment....

How long has your tank been running?
What are your water parameters?

My tank has been up and running for about a year and a half. I am not sure what my water parameters are. I just go off the test and I have all my stuff marked off of where it needs to be. Can't recall to save my life right now what they are at though. Sorry. Nothing has ever died in my tank. My star polyps are flourishing, my LTA is and has been doing GREAT! my zoo's, mushrooms, etc, have all been doing great.

My powerhead has been off and out of the tank since last weekend when I went in search for the shrimp. The only thing in the tank it could be now would be my heater.

My hermits (for some unknown reason) walk on their tippy toes around the perimeter of the tank sometimes. When they do this, their shells tap the glass. It took me a while to figure out what the noise was.

I was trying to locate the sound of clicking noises in my tank, and it turns out it's my bangaii cardinal. Took me forever to really believe it was him.

Are you serious? I have 4 bangaii cardinals and I get clicking noises in my tank and have no idea what the sound is. Three of them I bought. One was born in the tank.

Thank you all for all the input. It could be one of a few things making the sound. As the days pass by, I feel more confident that my 3 fish that died, might have been from something other than say a mantis or other fish. Thanks again.
