stinky water

Good afternoon all,

After my last water change, I left the last few gallons of salt water in the Brute container. Then I left town for a couple days. Now the water stinks.

I dumped the water, poured vinegar to cover the bottom of the barrel, let it soak for two hours, then dumped the vinegar out. I wiped the inside of the barrel and the paper towels came up with brown yuck all over them.

What is that stuff? The TDS ont eh RO/DI unit is measuring zero onthe output. THe salt mix is Reef Crystals, in a water tight bucket.

So now, I'm rinsing with more RO/DI, wiping down, rinsing and wiping. I guess I'll do that until the vinegar smell is gone.

What is that stuff? Why is it growing in my clean water?!

Hmm. I guess I only aerate before I change the water. I'll keep the maxijet in there whever there is water from now on.

Thanx

Good idea. In my case, I have about 250 gallons in my read for water change repository that is circulated with a powerhead and is heated approximately to my tank temperature.

I do the same thing.

In my 44g brute RO/DI water reservoir I use one of my extra return pumps to keep the water circulated.
