Stock List for RedSea Reefer 250

Hey all,

I'm planning a new system an am trying to think ahead to what I ultimately want to have in it fish-wise.

It is a RedSea Reefer 250 (35.5 L X 20 W X 21 D). Total system water capacity is 65 gallons with 54 gallons in the display area.

It will be a coral tank as well (SPS/LPS)

I based my list on this stocking guide:

http://www.aquariumprofessionals.com/article_stocking.htm#.VfT0mLO37tQ

and looked for peaceful, reef safe, colorful fish appropriate to my tank size.

Here is what I came up with:

Blue/Green Chromis X 3
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse X 1
Firefish X 1
Green Mandarin X 1
Orchid Dottyback X 1
Royal Gramma Basslet X 1

Does this seem reasonable, overstocked or understocked?

Of course I would add these slowly over time to reach the final list once my tank is established.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Stock size is fine but I would pick either the orchid dottyback or the royal gramma. They might not get along.

And I would advise against the Mandarin until you have several years experience in the hobby. They need a very mature tank with a massive pod population that is almost impossible to maintain without a refugium.

Many people will tell you that any group of chromis will become 1 fish after a few months. And chromis are prone to urenoma, which is why I've avoided them. If you do get them, make sure you quarantine.

I have an older model RSM250 and my finished stock list is:
2 Occelaris Clowns
2 pygmy filefish
1 royal gramma
1 firefish
1 neon goby
1 yellow banded possum wrasse

I also wanted all peaceful fish. And everyone gets along great. The gramma pretends to be a bully but its all show, and firefish are afraid of everyone.

I highly recommend a possum wrasse. They have awesome personalities.

My tank is fish only but I'm pretty sure all the fish are reef safe.

Also, check out the red sea max owners club on reef sanctuary. Good luck with the tank!

If you add the gramma and the orchid at the same time you should be fine. Orchids are not aggressive as far as dottybacks go, and a gramma picks his cave and stays in that vicinity.
