Stocking consideration list- chime in:)

Tank is 56g column, lots of flow, halide lighting, deep sand bed and live rock, and the already owned inhabitants are to be my Ocellaris pair and a Dwarf Angel. I prefer to stay away from known jumpers and super expensive fish.

OK, going through Bluezoo's website, I like the following:

Canary Blenny
Tribal Blenny
Banggai & pajama cardinals (but I only like them in groups)
Blue-Green Chromis (but only in groups)
Bluehead Tilefish
Panda Goby
Yellow-Stripe Clingfish
Longnose Hawkfish
Coral Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus )
Porcupine Pufferfish (says not reef safe, but is that only clams/hermits?)

OK, that's it for now. Please do chime in if you have experience with any of these guys. I have a QT tank, but it's only 20g, fyi.

thanks!

my 2 cents:

I'd stay away from the puffer.

I just got a PJ cardinal and I love it! I'd like to get another one too though. they're not a bright fish, but sooo pretty!

I also like the chromis in groups. they too are not exciting, exotic fish, but they put nice simple movement into the tank without being aggressive so you dont have to worry about them.

I haven't had a long nosed hawk but I loved my flame hawk. He had so much personality. Great fish.

Those are all I have had experience with. Good luck!

I have a Canary Blenny..I had a bunch of reef fish before this one..But for a inexpensive fish, these guys are great..Tons of personality ..

Hi guys.

Kelso, why the comment on the puffer? Any particular reason, have you heard about a lot of problems?

Only issue with the cardinals is I've read that they will often kill one another down to two (a pair) or even one. I've heard the same with chromis, actually. So, I'm hesitant to put them in. Then again, one blue-green chromis and one cardinal might be OK; I guess I always feel like they'll be lonely:p

Cool, Todd. Sounds like a nice, colorful addition, then. :)

Thx for the info, Kat. Do you know if that goes for all hawkfish, or just the longnose?

Great info, thanks everyone for helping me out.

anytime, Angela...maybe someone with more experience can support this..but i believe all hawkfish are jumpers...i think it's their nature. if you have a cover...or make one (EllieSuz made an awesome one!) you should be okay. I love hawkfish. but lost two to carpet surfing.

I'm going to change the porc puffer to a blue-spot puffer (smaller).

Thanks, Kat. I will look into it. I will have a cover, but with an open back so would not like frequent jumpers. I lost my little watchman to jumping this year. He kept jumping into the overflow, and I'd scoop him back into the tank. Eventually he was just gone one day. I'm expecting to find him when I take that tank down. :/

Decided on a stocking list and have ordered 3 PJ cardinals and 1 bluespot puffer for the tank. I'm going to let them be the first inhabitants and later add my ocellaris pair and dwarf angel. I think this will stock the tank pretty nicely, but if the cardinals kill each other off I'll add some bluegreen chromis. I also ordered a longspine urchin for the cardinals and as the sole algae-eater since the puffer will eat snails/crabs.

Thanks guys:)

OK, I've changed and solidified the plan quite a bit now since the fish will come next Tuesday:) Let me know what you think of the new plan below and if you have any tips. Super excited and I promise to post pics up this time. No, really, I will. Just bug me if I don't.

I've decided to use the sump from my 20g as a quarantine tank (this is a 10g aga.) I'll simply let the 20g run without it's attached sump- it's full of live rock for biofiltration.

The 10g sump turned quarantine also has live rock in it (and detritus, eew, gotta suck some of that out) and I'll let that run with live rock and the filter pad from the 20g until the fish get here. (I'll pull any pieces of live rock I care about out just before they get here, in case the puffer has parasites and needs treatment.)

The puffer will go in the 10g QT by himself. The cardinal trio will go in the 56g; and the clown pair and angel stay in the 20g for now.

Once all of the fish have been observed and area acclimated, I will introduce the clowns and puffer at the same time so that neither establishes territory (the clowns are semi to aggressive because they are a mating pair.) The angel will stay in the 20g until things are calm in the 56g and the critters start to really multiply (pods, etc) because he eats that stuff.

When the tank is ready for coral, I'll just have to try adding coral at night and see if the fish decides to eat the stuff. I will have to put things into the sump if I see them being decimated. Ah, well, I'll just take it as it comes, I guess. It will be limiting: no crabs, shrimp, snails, clams, etc.

OK, I know I'm a bit over ambitious, so wish me luck;) :)

In the case that one day someone looks up this thread for info on the puffer, I should say that I've decided to preemptively treat for parasites in QT for 3 weeks before adding to the display.

Cheers:)
