Hi so im looking to fill my new 300 gallon tank with fish, this is the list i have, but im wanting to see if anyone has suggestions for cool wrasses or other fish that i may have over looked.

secondly does anyone see major issues with the fish that are already on the list?

Thanks guys!

1-purple tang
2-yellow tangs
1-powder blue tang
1-Blonde Naso Tang
1-clown tang(everyone says to never get these, i have kept 4 alive for a long time and never had issues with any of them at all, just my experience though)
3-Orange anthias Female
3-Red anthias male
1-Melanurus Wrasse

I already have one clown fish, this thing will run the tank no matter what, as he always has in the past killing a clown tang and drawing blood on my arm many times....

Thanks again everyone!

Apart from the potential aggression between purple and yellow tangs, I don't see any problem with your list. In a 300g, the aggression should be pretty low, but you'd never know until the fish reach adult size in the tank. Same goes for the clown tang, most of the time the territorial behavior won't surface until maturity.

How about a large angel? An emperor/queen/french angel will be a nice show piece in a 300g. Don't mix those three though lol... they'd fight to death.

Great, thank you for the quick response.

With the angels, ive heard they eat coral and other inverts, is this true? if not i would love to add some angels to my tank.

That is true. There are no true "reef-safe" large angels. Most of them end up consuming corals, sooner or later. It may take a while for them to develop this habit, but most of them will eventually (even after several years). If this is going to be a reef tank, I would retract my suggestion on large angels. There are a couple of species that are relatively reef-safe (again, not 100%): regal, majestic, the chaetodontoplus and geniacanthus genuses.

Love the blue faced angels, I will look into these and perhaps drop the clown tang for an angle.

Can you have 2 angels in one tank? I would be looking for medium or so to keep with the other fish's sizes. Not looking to have a huge fish in this tank until they all grow into that size.

it is not recommended to have two large angels (pomacanthus/holacanthus genus) in one tank, unless the tank is very large (~1,000g). Large angels are very territorial and will in time fight with each other. There are, however, singular cases where some people have luck mixing them and having them get along fine as adults. However, those cases are few and far between. It depends entirely on the fish's personality. Again, it is not generally recommended. Please read this sticky below in the FOWLR forum.

Thank you for that thread, it was very informative. I was thinking of having two smaller angels. The problem is that so many are amazingly colorful and hard to pick which one you want LOL

Cant pick between these three:

Regal Angel
Imperator Angel
Queen Angel

I do not recommend regal angels to anyone who hasn't had enough experience keeping large angels. Regal is one of the hardest angels to keep, and most collected specimens end up not eating and wasting away. I truly hope people stay away from this species except for experienced aquarists. That being said, the red-sea/indian ocean specimen (yellow bellied) has a much higher success rate than indo-pacific ones (blue/gray bellied). I have had a red-sea one before and it did fairly well.

Both imperator and queen angels are the "alpha" angels, along with king angel (passer), and to a lesser extent, french angel. They will all want to be the king of the tank. Imperator and queen angels have similar personalities, and it'll come down to your personal likings as to which one you end up buying. I personally like imperator more than queen, but that's just me.

I had a blue face angel in my 300 gallon for a couple of years with no issues then one day I get home from work and he had wiped out about half a dozen corals and was still munching. I had to drain about half the water out of the tank to remove him. I also had a naso tang in that tank which was 10 foot long and all he did was swim from one end to the other all day and night. It made me feel like he was cramped in there. I currently have a 180 with a swallow tail angel and a female bellus angel which are doing great.

What do you mean by orange and red anthias? Are you referring to lyretail anthias? I would suggest getting all female anthias of any given species that you plan on purchasing so they can figure out how many males they need. If the tank is too small the males will fight until the death.

if u wanted bigger fish and no shrimps you could do a bird wrasse they are always on the move or a tusk would be cool

or you could go the opposite way and do tons of really small fish and one or two show fish

Thanks everyone for the responses. I got 6 Orange Female Lyretail Anthias, 1 powder blue, 1 blonde naso and 1 Melanurus Wrasse today. letting these settle in for a few weeks before i choose to add anything else.

The tangs won't work. They need longer tanks. Especially te bask tang! I would also suggest you QT all of your fish. Also SLOW DOWN! The tangs shouldnt be in the tank yet because they can be aggressive to new additions.
