Stocking my 25

I am starting a new 25 gallon reef tank, and was wondering which fish would go well together. These are the fish I was hoping to include:

- 1 Ocellaris Clown
- 1 Blue/Green Chromis
- 1 Firefish
- 1 Blue neon goby
- 1 Scalefin/Lyretail Anthia
- 1 YellowHead Jawfish

I was also thinking about a flame angel, but decided that it would probably pick too much, and would be a little big for the tank. Let me know what you think of this list, and give me as much feedback as possible. I am new to saltwater, and hopefully if I do as much research as possible, everything should go smoothly.

I wouldn't do a Anthia. From what I read, they do best in groups of three and require a tank 2-3 times your size. What about getting another Clown?

I don't think the anthia would do well, but a centropgye angel like a Chrub would do well and they generally don't pick that much.

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking the anthia wouldn't works, but they are really cool looking, so I thought I would put it on the list anyway. Maybe a Diadem Dottyback would work instead of that. The only other thing I am worried about is using the upper half of my tank since it is a 25 tall. I know the chromis will use it, but I have heard they do well in groups, so maybe i should get 2-3 of them?!?!? However I would rather find some other fish than having 2-3 of the same kind, and I don't know what uses the upper half, again I appreciate all feedback as I am new to the subject.

6 fish seems like overkill in a tank your size. Your bioload is going to be a lot and your fish will definitely be crowded. I'd select fewer personally...

The rule of thumb is (granted this is somewhat subjective as you'll find out): 2" of fish per every 10 gallons.

Good point, I could drop the neon goby , because the Yellowhead Jawfish will stay on the bottom, and I don't need 2 down there.

Any other ideas for upper half fish?

In a 25, I would only do a pair of Clowns [that's what I started out with in my 20 gallon] You get obsessed like the rest of us, you'll have a bigger tank in no time.....wait on a bigger tank

I'd take out the anthia. And as for other upper level fish, if you get an anemone for your clown and he hosts it, place the anemone farther up and wala you have both an upper and middle level fish

I agree, I would go with the firefish, clown, and jawfish, or trade one of these out for the neon goby{the gold ones are awesome}and call it done. I also would not recommend an anemone for a new tank, and unless you plan on strong lighting{metal halides}.

Thanks for the advice, I agree that 6 fish is a lot, and I wasn't planning on an anemone, at least not to start. I will probably just start out with fish (clown, firefish, and jawfish seems like a good combo) for the first couple months to make sure that my water quality is healthy and stable. Then eventually I will get better lighting and add some corals and maybe an anemone.

i have four small fish in each of my 30g and they have lots of room, but I wouldn't go more than 4 or 5. In one tank I have two tiny ocellaris, a sixline wrasse (he's very friendly!), and an Eibli angel. The other tank has a maroon clown, purple firefish, coral beauty angel, and a mccosker wrasse. they all get along great. i love the angels and wrasse because they swim throughout the rocks a lot. the maroon clown is funny because he hosts a new coral every 3 minutes. the ocellaris swim around together everywhere, very cute. the firefish just kind of sits there in front of the tank flicking his fin but he's pretty so its ok.

I looked in your gallery and everything looks nice. I'm surprised that the maroon clown doesn't beat on the other, I heard that they are jerks. How is your coral beauty with the coral? I have heard they pick, but from what I can tell it is hit or miss with them. I also really like your avatar, what are those?

Thanks, yeah the maroon was the original inhabitant of the first 29g tank we set up. He has been in there since April 2005 and he hasn't bothered any new fish besides maybe chasing a couple an inch and then ignoring them. We've always tried to rearrange the rock whenever we saw that kind of behavior and he stopped.

The Coral Beauty has never nipped at any of our corals, however our Eibli angel in the other tank was fine with all of the zoos and mushrooms but nipped at an open brain when we put it in there.

My avatar is a shot of some of our zoos, they are Eagle Eye and Radioactive Dragon Eye. They don't look as bright as they do in the photo anymore unfortunately because that was taken as soon as we got them and we only have power compacts so they have sort of faded.
