Stocking plans, yea or nay ?

Still in the building stage of my new fish only tank, finishing up the stand now. Being that I have had the tank for 3 months sitting dry I have gone though like a thousand different ideas and think I might have things narrowed down now, but want to make sure that I am not missing anything that could be a problem.

So the tank is a 144 gallon half moon tank with a 75 gallon sump. It will have a refugium on it and has a big'o skimmer as well. Here is what I have planned so far, please let me know if I will be asking for trouble or if I am missing something.

Fish that I already have that will be going into tank:
Maroon Clown
Huma Huma Triggerfish
Dragon Wrasse

Planned fish:
Threadfin Lookdown
Harlequin Tuskfish
Zebra Morey


Fish I am unsure about, dont know if they will get along:
Black Volitan lion
Freckled Hawkfish
maybe some sort of tang?

Does this look over stocked? Got any better suggestions? This will be my first tank of this size, and with that it has opened up more options, so if there is something neat I could get in here I would love to hear about it. Thank you for all your help. :beer:
 
well IMO the lion and the thread fin can not go in the tank if the trigger is in the same tank.

from everything i have read in the sticky at the top of the page the trigger will take the fins off both fish. i think the rest looks ok. might be slightly overstocked. but nothing you couldnt make up with top of the line filtration.

what are you planning for filtration??
 
agree with DoubleM...a Trig should not be placed with a Lion of Thread Fin...some will say the tank is too small for a Trig., but if it is quite small you will be okay for a while...
 
A P. volitans will eat the clownfish...I know of at least two people who have lost maroons that were over 6" to adult volitans.

Just a note: in case you don't know, dragon wrasses aren't so cute when they reach maturity, as they grow into their wild-looking finnage. They will also rearrange any rocks they can flip over in their search for tasty inverts.

Do you plant these threads just so you can rub it in?:spin2: You have my permission to identify me by screen name whenever the maroon/Volitans question comes up. BTW, this same Volitans went to a friend and helper of mine; it then ate a 5-6" pink face wrasse.
 
I totally forgot about triggers and lions being a no go. Did not know about them not being good with the lookdown, thanks guys for the heads up, I love the trigger so those will be no goes. The dragon is past its juvie colors, and has lost his top fins. I really dig the fish, moves more like a clown and is really active. Greg I have done a google search for imagines and cant tell if my dragon is reached its adult colors or not, would you happen to know of a good place to look for pictures sir?

So we are looking at now:
dragon wrasse
huma huma tiggerfish
maroon clown
zebra moray
Harlequin Tuskfish

and then? I have been a nano reef guy for quite sometime so I am really stuck. I am looking for stuff that is really out of the ordinary since I wont have any coral in the tank. Anyone have suggestions on fish? I want to do my research now, thanks again for every ones help :)

Dood...no offense intended, and you are indeed being a good sport.

Oddly enuff, since I know a couple of folks it has happened to, I don't single anyone out. I've done some plenty of questionable things myself!

Man, that lion must be a hungry one! I've had a SFE kill and eat PART of a PFW, so at least in your friend's case, the lion finished the meal...I ended up with a headless pink-faced carrion.

As far as filtration goes on the tank I run a coralife skimmer rated at 210 gallons, the tank will also have a ref on it with Chaetomorpha Algae in it, and I also will be running a carbon reactor and a 18w Coralife Turbo-Twist UV Sterilizer. Does this sound like it will work? Again thanks everyone for the help.

How much LR? The UV won't hurt anything, but won't do much either. Some people get a false sense of security, thinking UV will prevent/cure parasite infestations. It will do neither. It will help a little with algae; but (IMO & IME) the constant cleaning and bulb replacement just isn't what little they do. Unless you haven't already got it, save your money and put into a better skimmer.
 
Currently have about 150lbs, and will have a little more once I shut down my reef tank completely. The uv came with the tank, I was going to buy a replacement bulb, but if its not worth it I will save the money? Any other ideas of things to check out for stocking?

IMO you will need a much bigger skimmer than that one.

i have a reef dynamics IN-80 on my 55 gallon that has 2 fuzzy lions a marine betta and a ghost ribbon eel. and that thing pulls alot of crap out of the tank(possible i have a heavy feeding hand). i would get something rated to a LEAST 300 gallon. IMO
 
Hoping to be able to use what I have until I can shut down the reef and sell some of the lights on it to buy upgrades for this tank. Any suggestions for skimmers? I like to buy local normally but being that I live in Iowa it can be hard to find nice products.

well i ordered my reef dynamices from their website and recieved great service. the skimmer is a beast.

its rated to 300. and a very reasonable price IMO. from what i have learned and im sure you know by now that if you skimp in the beginning you will pay dearly later.
 
Thank you so much, that is a great price. That is less then what I paid for my current skimmer!

O yeah learned that pretty early on lol I am still about a month or two out from water, but at that price I think I can pick it up alot sooner. Was thinking I would have to spend way more then that.

yeah thats just what skimmer i thinks. im sure others will find other great values. i pick a skimmer for 2x my display size. i do not count the sump because the sump does not add to the bioload it help keep it down. most of our animals live in the DT anyway. if you have the money i would go for one of the bigger one in case you wanna upgrade ur tank later( like you are now lol)
 
Yeah I will for sure be getting a lot larger skimmer, the more I thought about it last night. With this type of bioload and heavy eaters I will need to be a must.

So with my current stocking looking like this:
dragon wrasse
huma huma tiggerfish
maroon clown
zebra moray
Harlequin Tuskfish

Do I have any more wiggle room for any other additions ? And any suggestions as to what to look at that will fit into this grouping?
