stomache problems

Ok so I am being serious about this because I just do not know if this can be possible. I got my tank about 3 months ago. I am always putting my hand in the water, yes washing first, to move something or adjust something etc. I do water changes with a siphon hose/tubing once a week. Sometimes I siphon out red slime or other crap with a smaller plastic tubing. I do it the old fashioned way by sucking on one end to start the siphon and spitting out the little amount of water that does get into my mouth.

Here is where I want you to know I am serious in asking this. I get diareah and sick stomaches more often now than I ever have. I thought about it and it began about 2.5 months ago, yes, about the time I got my tank. I don't swallow the water, but I'm not stupid in knowing that bacteria doesn't need to be swallowed to get into your system. I have not had a flu, or a cold or anything like that, ONLY diareah and sick stomaches.

When we are young and we accidently swallow sea water at the beach, we sometimes can get diareah etc.

So the $64,000 question is...... could it be possible that this is causing my problems ?

Again I am new to this so I really do not know and it is not my intention to be joking around about this.

Thank you in advance

You can put the hose in the water, filling it up, put your finger over one end and bringing it down to the holding bucket, take finger off. You no longer have to do it the same way you did when you borrowed gas from your dads tractor.

Maybe you have been obsessing over your tank...and haven't taken the time to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fiber.

I'm with the rest, I just don't see the possibility. I think you'd have to take a pretty good gulp of red slime before you'd even be considered at-risk. Some folks have real sensitivity to the toxins that Zoanthids release. So if you've been mucking around with those, and didn't wash your hands well enough, I suppose that might be an issue. Even that is highly dependant on your sensitivity to allergens, etc.

I'd start looking for problems in the kitchen before considering the aquarium.

Though I heard that a friend of a friend had a problem with aiptasia living in his colon after a bizarre reef-club hazing incident. His doctor had to use the longest Joe's Juice syringe-nozzle you've ever seen.

you do know the siphon starts before the water reaches your mouth? you dont have to suck the water into you mouth. but i dont think thats your problem. i surf and scuba dive and have been drinking sea water since i was a baby.......stop eating mcdonalds

I know of a fella that got a bad bug through his fishtank. Not enough hand washing etc, needed some medicine and all. Go to the doctors and get them to give ya a couple test to at least rule out an infection.

I have seen it before yet its highly unlikely. It sounds more like criptospiredium. Not a tank issue but a bad water quality issue such as swimming pools with little kids. There have been many outbreaks nation wide this year do it. Also many cities have been changing there water clarification systems and it has broken off bad crap in the water. It go’s with the old saying dont drick down stream from the heard. I would see a Doc. and let them run a CBC, O&P, Hpylori, and a Cripto smear.

I'm pretty sure he said he hasn't swallowed any water...

But along the lines of what RioReefer is saying, I agree in the possibility. plus it's possible that you transfer something on your hands without sucking down the water.

If you were puking too, i'd wonder about Giardia or something ugly like that. But regardless if it's constant enough to bring it up publically here... it's probably worth asking a doc about.

Definately go to the doctor and have some tests run. My father had some similar symptoms a few month ago. He waited about 3 months before going, because he hates doctors. As it turned out he had a huge gall stone that was blocking the passage to his pancreas. He ended up in the the hospital for over a month, having three surgeries before it was over. Get it checked out and taken care of before something like this happens.

oh sh*t ! Ok I will go to the doctor. Thank you all for your consideration and advice. I'm STILL having diarrhea although it's not everyday. :-( I will call on Monday for sure.

The lights on reef tanks can make me (and my wife) a nauseous under certain circumstances but that is pretty mild.

Early last month I was on the way home from work and I had the worst pain in my entire life right under my sternum. I threw up and everything was ok. Two days later same thing, went to the ER and they said my lipase was elevated and to come back Monday for a sonagram as they suspected my gallblader was giving out. Tuesday of that night I had another horrible attack knowing I was headed for the ER again that night I went down to the tank to refill my topoff container knowing I may not be back in a few days.

Thats when it all went bad for me, right after I refilled the container non stop nausea, vomiting, horrible pain etc and went right to the ER. After a pretty severe case of pancreatitus and gall bladder removal I was doing better but each time I looked at picture of my tank or something tank related out of a magazine I got instant nausea for some reason, I guess my mind associated the tank with bad things like when you get food poisoning.... I was worried I would have to sell everything, lol!

It took a few days after I got out of the hospital for me to be able to look at my tank without feeling sick.

Oh yea, moral of the story see your Doctor.

Palythoa toxin? To you have alot of Zoanthids, Palys, etc? Make sure you tell the doctor you have a fish tank. My understanding is that the palythoa toxin is not something they typically test for. Remember, the palythoa toxin was used for thousands of years by the natives as a hallucinative agent and a poison for dart tips. Go your your doc.
