Storing/Viewing photos in the field.

I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with portable hard drive/photo viewers.

Something like the Epson P-4000.

I will be shooting in RAW in the field for about 2.5 months - that's a lot of gigabytes. I will have access to computers sometimes, however they aren't really intended for photo use and can't read RAW.

I may end up buying a device that allows me to upload pics from my camera to my iPod, yet I want to be able to view RAW files. The price tag on the Epson's isn't so great, that's a new lens!

Any opinions on these devices would be appreciated.

Cheers

I've had a P4500 for about a year now. The screen is amazing- that's the first thing you notice. For picture storage on the road it works as advertised- I've got no complaints other than I wish the battery lasted longer (for video). Next time I take a long flight I'm gonna have two batteries. I loaded it up with movies for a trip to Russia I took about a month ago and found out the hard way that video kills the battery in about 3 hours, maybe less. I never ran out of battery power just for photo storage though, or when listening to music.

My understanding of the devices that allow direct storage to ipod is that it's REALLY slow. I generally travel with my laptop but I'm still looking into one of those for when I really don't want to.

How much are they?? The price of computers is so low these days you might be able to get a laptop for the same or not much more.

I think it's like $600-$1000 sort of range for them.

I would rather use a laptop, but it's not feasible for me. A portable hard drive would work too, I could skip out on the screen. But it will kill me not to be able to view my pictures until I return home.

As for laptops... my toshiba finally crapped out, so to tie me over I found a iBook G4 for half the price of an Epson P-4500.
