So I'm going to start by saying that I have been thinking that I need to buy a generator for my tank "just in case." Anyways, I never did because I wasn't under pressure to buy one. Well today I was just watching tv on the couch around 5:30... All of a sudden my power goes out. It came back on a few times but was out for good for 3 full hours.

I went to Home Depot after an hour (and after I had an air stone going in my DT) and I bought a 2.5 gal gas can and a RYOBI generator.

I get gas and head home to start it up.

By now it is dark so I can't read the instructions easily... I am trying to figure out this new version of a gas can with 7 million safety features. Well that didn't work so I hust dumped gas basically everywhere on my deck... Then I need to add oil to the generator... They didn't give me a funnel so I used a diy water bottle funnel... Finally ready to get this thing going and bam, the power is back on. So now Im going to the bar to drink away my money splurge that I can't return. I suppose it will be worth it one day though.

This was hard to write without cursing like a sailor.

Bye

Hope you didn't loose anything

i didnt loose or lose anything :)

the power was out for like 3 hours and my temp dropped 1.3 degrees. i had a battery powered pump with an airstone going the entire time.

I called ameren initially and they said it was a maintenance issue and i requested they call me back and tell me wha tthe problem was. they said it was a rotting power line. that freaks me out... so i suppose it is good i have a generator now.

ugh, i need to get a generator...better to have one now then when a tornado comes and knocks down power for days

guess thats my next to buy thing

well i am the HELP guy so I would be donating it to myself. it is in my outside storage locked up with all of the other HELP equipment! lol

It's a good thing to have for sure. Don't forget to fire it up every couple of months for a few minutes. This will ensure you don't have trouble firing it up when you actually need to use it.

Also when you fire it up every few months you need to put a load on it to keep the generator part from corroding. I just plug in an electric heater and run for a while.

I bought a gen this winter just I so wouldnt have a power outage. I figured if I didnt have one power would be out for days. I got one and no outages all winter.

I've never heard of this. Where did you come across this information? Just the starting and spinning of the rotor inside of the stator should be enough to knock of any corrosion I thought.

I dont have concrete proof that it helps. I feel that just spinning isnt enough. I want heat to build up by putting a load on it. Plus this ensures that the generator actually works.
