Storytime again for us fish nerds... Southern Japan and Guam dive/fish trip 2012 :)

Anybody have any recent photos of Copps' new tanks? I know John is super busy - would love to see his newer stuff! Heck, I'll settle for more of his old!

Hello RC! My apologies for my absence but in addition to my normal busy life our club just got done hosting MACNA last weekend. Three years ago a core group of four of us sat down and decided to bid to host MACNA 2015... fast forward three years and hundreds of hours of work, and we just finished hosting the largest MACNA in history! In addition to selling out our banquet weeks in advance of about 1500 people, the total attendance was over 3600. As speaker coordinator I brought in 23 other speakers from around the world. I gave the first presentation on my new large system and personally introduced every speaker after that... something very important to me. Anyway, here's the speakerboard of the talk I gave... for those that missed it I'll be giving this brand new talk for reef clubs, starting with our local club here in DC WAMAS next month...

Anyway... I am just now getting new SPS... every SPS that you see in my system came out of my old 180 gallon... now filling in 1300. I have two layers of coral quarantine set up, and my new pieces have yet to come out of QT. My presentation had 114 slides! Here's a few updated shots... it still has a long way to go so bare with me... this system will be so much more... I only starting moving my corals over early last year...

Corner view...

Side view... 8.5 feet front to back...

And some front views... six feet front to back... height of tank is 42"... viewing window is 30" high...

Combo shots... from the rec room looking down the hallway to the anemone tank...

From the fish room with the anemone tank on the left...

And some shots of the anemone tank... 5' x 3' x 25" high... viewing window is only 3' wide... all plumbing and circulation is hidden from view...

Macna

Caught your presentation at MACNA. Awesome!

All the MACNA speakers were great by the way. I know you and the DC club worked hard on it. It was a great MACNA.

Thanks!

Mark

Thanks so much for the update, tank looks great. You probably mentioned it, but who manufactured your corner tank?

Looking forward to future updates.

Absolutely stunning. Pics are worth 1000 words, but here a 1,000,000. Keep it up for us. Let's see those Angels and tangs:)

hate to say it, dont think there's many public aquariums that can compete with what you have put together, well done!

While there are many ho-hum public aquariums... there are many great ones too... and all of the greats are due to great aquarists behind the scenes that had a great influence on me setting up my new house... Joe Yaiullo at the Long Island Aquarium... Matt Wandell and Rich Ross at the Steinhart... Dr. Bruce Carlson at the Waikiki Aquarium... no wonder I brought each of them in to speak at MACNA... :)

I am very jealous of one thing my public aquarium buddies have that I will never... employees!:hmm4:

Thanks so much Mark... MACNA was an incredible amount of work but paid off greatly... one of my favorite sayings is "the only relaxing reef tanks are other people's"... and that goes with MACNAs also! Next year in San Diego I will be more relaxed and have more time to chat...

beautiful, love the depth, very natural aquascape, great job John!

Thank you... a lot went into the planning... and the execution! Congrats on your TOTM... the more time goes along the more you'll appreciate it.

you are professional cameraman really. pictures just like in aquarium magazines. thanks for sharing

Well let's not go too far... I'm an aquarist... not a photographer... and keep in mind most aquarium magazine articles are from hardcore aquarists... not hardcore photographers... the age of digital photography has made things much easier...

For those interested I have an article in the July/August issue of Coral Magazine... that was handed out coincidentally in the bags given out at MACNA... on Centropyge interrupta... the Japanese Pygmy Angel...

It was a full custom build from Fiberglass Specialties... http://fiberglassprofessionals.com/

Jeff was great... can't recommend him enough... this tank will outlive me.

What's a "tang"?

Anyway here are some of the angels...

Centropyge loriculus/ C. ferrugata hybrid... spawning female...

Centropyge colini... collected by Tony Nahacky in Fiji in the early 2000s... this female gave birth to all the captive bred C. colini that Frank Baensch spawned in 2005... I lost the male in the move...

Cocos-Keeling Centropyge flavissima... for now...

Centropyge potteri/C. fisheri hybrid... third one documented...

Centropyge resplendens/C. fisheri hybrid...

Genicanthus watanabei... the one and only ever captive bred! From Karen Brittain the Great... just turned three years old!

Super special Centropyge multicolor hybridized with full C. ferrugata or a C. ferrugata/C. loriculus hybrid...

Ok for the tang folks...

One of the gems...

Zebrasoma rostratum/Z. scopas hybrid

For the clown people... my Amphiprion "leucokranos" pair I've had for years... in two magnifica anemones in the center of the 1300...

For the anthias people... Pseudanthias hawaiiensis... which is just freaking awesome...

Damsel people... don't laugh... I love them... especially Chrysiptera... this is Chrysiptera galba from the Cooks...

Pyramids!!

And TRUE Bodianus opercularis from the Indian Ocean... wanted it for years and now they're available...

I always appreciate getting to see all of your amazing angels. The tank is really coming along nicely, I was really excited to see an update.

For those of us who couldn't attend MACNA, is there anywhere online to see the speakers?

jaw dropping as always!!!

Thanks Ryan! I brought in three of your countrymen as speakers... Lyle Squire of Cairns Marine, Allan "Acro Al" van Zijl, and the great Dr. Charlie Veron... author of the coral bible and the man who has described more than 25% of corals... Charlie needed help this past week pulling specimens at Smithsonian Museum of Natural History... home of the largest collection of coral type specimens in the world and right in my backyard... WHAT A MAN AND WHAT A DAY!

On the top of his list were the type specimens of Acropora tutuilensis... one of my favorites!

I've had "King tut"... my Acropora tutuilensis for years from the Reefer Madness days... here it is in my 180 years ago...

And a recent shot in the 1300... it's now a giant... had to move the lights out of the way to get a shot of it... you could see the side that grew into the glass of the 180... and now is sprouting branches...
