Strange GSM Clownfish Behavior

I have a ~2 year old gold striped maroon clown and it's behavior as of late seems rather strange since I moved it over to my 10G. I have had the fish for almost 9 months. First and foremost I should probably add that there is not an anemone in the tank and it shares the tank with hermits, 2 large cleaner shrimp, and cleanup snails (nassarius, astrea, cerith). Here's what I'm observing:

It will swim around the tank like normal but will seem to see itself in the reflection of the tank walls. After this happens, it gets down low near the sand and swims real fast in place kicking sand up everywhere. Sometimes it does this with it's back to the tank wall. It does this for what I think is most of the time, but especially when I'm sitting in front of the tank watching everything. The rest of the time when I stand-off BVR of the clown, it will then swim around and occasionally do it. At night, it sleeps like a normal fish.

This behavior is different that what I've seen before. Before it was doing it just a little bit in some of the caves in my 50G tank where it shared the tank with a similarly aged and sized Blue Velvet Damsel--the damsel was the king of the tank, no doubt. I was thinking maybe it is kicking up sand as a sort of mating ritual, but there is no other clownfish in the tank. Is it just seeing it's reflection and trying to scare off the other "clown" it sees or is it trying to woo the other "clown" to mate?

The fish is perfectly healthy as far as I can tell. Good color, very active, intelligent. The other day I witnessed it pick up a tiny rock from the sand and carry it in its mouth from one side of the tank to the other before letting it drop. For food, it gets a seemingly well diversified diet: Ocean Nutrition Formula 1 small pellets, Hikari Marine-S pellets, Nutrafin max marine flakes, a little Sweetwater Zooplankton, or small portions of thawed Mysis or Brine frozen cubes. I spend about 2-3 minutes a day feeding it in the evening and it will eat and eat until it is full. The rest of the time it is free to scavenge for any pods that are climbing over everything or any algae that it can find that looks tasty.

I'm not really bothered by the behavior, I just can't figure out what's going on. Thanks for any help, I thought I'd ask.

she is just making the tank hers and re-arranging things the way she likes it. how big is she? maroons get large at 2 years she should be fairly large by now. I would seriously suggest a 30 gallon or larger for a mature maroon clown.

Ah, I forget about the whole sex thing when there is only one clownfish. So yes it is actually a she.

I guess on a good day, she's at the max 4". I bought her around the first part of July last year and she was maybe 2". Any idea what age this should be? I just said ~2 years because I really don't know. Maybe she's closer to 1 year?

And a 10G is all she's getting for now. Maybe in the future I'll upgrade. As far as the rearranging goes, it's funny to watch. But she needs to learn to aquascape a little and not leave odd piles of sand messing up my substrate line and cloudying my water. :D

If she was 3" how old would she be--so I can gauge the growth rate?

Also, are there any other quirky things I should know about keeping a GSM throughout her "natural" life? And what are some things that I can do to make her life a little better? I know about the larger tank, anything else?

Thanks for your help.

The 10 is pretty small for a GSM. That is almost certainly part of the issue with her aggressive behavior. She is probably putting on a dominance display for her reflection in the glass. The glass is so close to her everywhere that she doesn't feel she can get away from the "other fish." She really needs a bigger tank. Remember the glass is the cheapest part of running a tank.

In the mean time make sure you arrange the rocks so that she has plenty of places to go where she will not have to see her reflection. Putting up paper etc. on the outside of the tank only makes the reflection worse so don't try that.

Also, a small to medium sized clay pot (for plants) is a great place for her to hide. Also an appropriately sized piece of PVC either a T or and elbow may be a welcome hiding place for her.

Yeah, that part is not right. I stuck my finger to the tank when she was parallel to the glass today and then measured my finger. She's definitely not 4", more like 2.5".

As far as the PVC stuff goes, I was thinking of using two short pieces of 1" ID PVC, 2x90 degree elbows and a tee and burying it all in the sand underneath my rockwork. Do you think the she'd go for that?

I may try it and see how she likes it.

That's OK, all us guys have the same difficulty estimating length.

Keep feeding her like she wants and she'll outgrow your tank and be ready for a special "friend" in no time.

clowns love pvc elbows, i have one in all my breed tanks
What size PVC elbow?

I just finished feeding her. Formula One pellets was the menu tonight. Is it alright if she swallows air and then has to belch it back out? Some of the pellets float when I drop them in and she goes for them at the surface and gets some air with the food.

I put a 4" long piece of 1" PVC tonight in her tank. It's angled at 45 degrees from the glass so if she goes in it, she doesn't see that "mean fish". I guess I'll just wait now and see if she houses in it before I try anything fancy. Oh and these dimensions are right this time :D

And here's a pretty good picture I got of her the other night. The picture is a little dark as I focused on a dark part of the tank so it would take the picture quickly. She moves too quick for normal light pictures with my camera (Olympus Stylus 300 Digital).

I really like her bold yellow stripes and the little band of neon orange around her fins.
