Strange Question

I have been reading a lot about Mantis Shrimp and decided to try one out. 2.5 gallon glass tank for a small shrimp, small biowheel filter, crushed coral substrate, a couple small pieces of live rock and PVC pipe....

My primary question no ones seems to have covered is

Will this mantis shrimp climb out of the tank if there is no lid? I think I'd have a heart attack..... Would he crawl up the filter? Do they die quick when out of water...... I don't want this thing crawling out of his tank and onto me laying on the nearby couch. Will room temperature water of 65-70 degrees be ok?

Also should I keep the glass aquarium or go for a 3 gallon plastic one. I doubt he would break through although they are capable of it, I've seen them in pet shops in beta bowls......

any more tips...... which one should I buy for small size with vibrant color? I'd really like one that gets no bigger than 2.5 inches.

Any help would be appreciated.

1. One on occassion I have heard of a mantis jumping out of an aquarium, so a lid would be recommended, I suppose.

2. Temperature depends on the species. Some of the mantis that Dr. Roy keep seem to be very sensitive to minute temperature changes.

3. (I'll let someone more knowledgeable answer this) =)

I have a 5 inch female Peacock and no lid on my 38 gallon tank. She has been in there for about 3 months now, and has never attempted to swim up out of the tank. In fact, she rarely even gets halfway up the tank unles she is chasing food.

N. wennerae will occasionally crawl above the water line, but this is rare. They also are not likelly to jump out of the water more than an inch or two.

O. scyllarus will jump, but their mass means that they are unlikely to clear more than two or three inches. The most accomplished jumpers are small Odontodactylus species such as O. havanensis and O. latirostris. They can easily jump three or four inches.

A few stomatopods hunt out of the water. G. smithii comes to mind.

N. wennerae can go for hours out of the water if it can keep the gills wet. If not, only an hour or two.
