Found these strange spots around my tangs eye that appear to be getting worse. It's not ich it looks like little spots that just have no pigment. Any idea what it could be? Thanks!

Based on the photo, it looks like your sailfin tang is starting to get
lateral line disese. This is not something that can be treated easily, nor is it immediately fatal. However, it will scar your fish.
Hope he/she gets better!

It's usually brought on with poor water quality, however I can assume that you don't have that given the healthy coral in the picture. How long have you had the fish?

Thanks for the replies! Yeah I came to the same conclusion but I'm puzzled because like you said my water quality is superb. I've had him for maybe 6 months but I noticed the spots appearing maybe 2 months ago. All the other fish seem to be doing well but I don't know why he is having this problem.

There are a hundred guesses as to why HLLE starts. Poor water quality is just one of them. Some others are: improper/inadequate diet, stray voltage, carbon use...ummm...I'm out. lol I know there are tons of thoughts as to why HLLE starts, I just can't think of them all.

Ok lol. Well thanks for the conformation. I'll post again with an update in a few days along with what I did to combat the problem. thanks!

It,s possible before you bought the fish, it had a copper treatment, this is one of the possible cause.
I was reading a good diet with high vitamine C and A, can hel

I had a flame angel that got HLLE. I fed garlic, and good food which seemed to help. But then I had a breakout of ich a few months later due to a water temp drop down to 60 deg while I was on vacation. After moving him and all my fish to a quarantine hyposalinity tank the ich and HLLE went away.

Do you think ich (before it had shown itself) stressed the fish causing HLLE? I may be way off with this, but if you have ich in your tank maybe it is not showing itself, but is stressing the fish causing HLLE?

Thanks for all the replies! So far I've bought some vitamarin multi vitamin supplement to soak the food in and I also ordered a grounding probe that should be here on wednesday. I also did a 20% water change yesterday even though my parameters were in check. I do use chemi-pure carbon in a bag in the sump but I haven't changed it in about 6 months. Would the carbon cause this also?

Sorry but there is no current cure and no one knows what causes it. Many tangs and angels get it but any fish could get it. It is not fatal but the fish could lose almost all of it's outer skin and turn a sickly white.
There are many theories but it seems to be caused by captivity as wild fish do not get it.

I know that there is no proven cause but I was more looking for what has worked for others in personal experience.

Removing carbon worked in my case, but I was using pelletized carbon in a reactor, and fines were getting into the water.

Ok no more chemi pure carbon, feeding nori, spirulina flakes, and brine shrimp all soaked in vitamarin m, did a 20% water change and my water chemistry is flawless and I have a grounding probe that should be here on Wednesday. I think I've got all the bases covered. Can anyone think of anything else? I was also thinking of trying to get a hold of some red ogo macro algae to try to culture and feed cause I read about a few cases were that helped. Has anyone had experience with that?

Here's a couple pics with the infected areas outlined.

I have several tangs and the best thing I have found is to just vary their diet with nori every other day food soaked with zoe as a vitamin and a bit of garlic extreme in their meaty food plus good , stable water quality and room to swim. Hope this helps

Has he finished his study yet? I would love to read about his findings. I also use peletized carbon in a reactor and have been getting carbon into the water. I added a bunch of filter floss after the carbon now, so I don't get any into the water. But the my fish with HLLE is still in quarantine. I hope the HLLE does not come back when I return him to the tank.
