String coming from maxima

I just bought a new 3.5" maxima over the weekend, and it looks great. But for the past 5 days it looks like their is a string coming from it's mouth, it extends out about 2-3" and is only there like half the time. Anyone know what this is? The string is the same color as his lips.

At first I thought it was a hair, but I'm pretty sure now it was clam poo. But I have another concern; the clam's mouth has been gaping open the whole time I've had him. Is this from stress or what? My water parameters are great

your Maxima is a Crocea!!! Croceas gape for no good reason,it looks fine to me
