I was watching this show on Animal Planet and they said that the squirt of water that a mantis shrimp ejects to kill its prey from its claw can reach the temperature of the sun momentarily. Anybody know more about this??

The mantis shrimp they showed doing this stunned a poor cleaner shrimp and then chowed it down.

Yup pistol shrimp.. sorry. Other than Wild Nature On Discovery claiming that the collapse of the bubble causes it to temp readch the surface temp of the sun, doees anyone actually have any research data from somewhere supporting this?!?!?!?

There is a German group that has been working on cavitation produced by the snap of snapping shrimp. The collapse of the bublle does produce incredibly high, but brief temperature spikes. Light is also emitted (but not that you could see) If you search for snapping shrimp and cavitation or light you can probably find their web page that discusses this.

There will be a BBC program on the stomatopod strike after the first of the year. They will leave snapping shrimp in their wake!
