ok this is a stupid question
but i want to know if i am doing more work than i have too

ok when you say "water change"
does that mean after the water evaporates then replace with new fresh?

or take out and put in new saltwater (like i do)?

Topping off is when you add freshwater to the tank to make up for evaporated water.

A water change is generally draining some of the water in the tank, then replacing it with a new batch of saltwater.
