Stylater sp.- AKA Lace Coral

So I'm thinking of getting a pink lace coral (stylaster sp.). What do you all know about it? I know it is a little different than the average blue lace coral as I am talking about the pink one with thiner branches.

Does it sting? (it is a "fire coral" right?)

Are they hard to get a hold of?

Anything I should know?

I know they are not the easiest coral to keep but we are talking NPS here...

Your funny, I was just going to post a picture of that along with a tag...."OMG". I did not have success but I think mine might have been dead before I got it. I never saw polyps at night. . The good thing is when they die they keep their color. So if you can keep the algae off of it you can't tell. LOL I think Aquabacs was having some luck but I have not seen an update in awhile.

Don have some faith in me They are doing good. I cant get in as close with this camera as my last but trust me, they are still alive. Small white polyps are visible, some days the feeders are "hairy" other days they are not. They need to be kept in high flow and direct fed atleast every other day.

Do they sting? Aren't they "fire corals"?

When you are speaking of "fire corals" you are talking about Millepora http://www.arkive.org/fire-coral/millepora-dichotoma/ and it can sting the F out of you depending on the coral.

Now lace corals: Distichopora & Stylaster I would not be overly concerned about

I would presume the same as Distichopora. I will tell you in a few months how well Stylaster exactly does in the same conditions

I really wanted it but my nps tank is still not quite ready for corals yet. Any pix?

It hasnt been shipped to me yet, it is still at LA. They are suppose to ship Monday for Tuesday delivery. After it is in my system for a while, with some special TLC, I will let you know how well it does. This is the first Stylaster I have see sold for a while but Kevin has a few other goodies up his sleeve that he hasnt let go of yet.

Time to get you hands wet Only way we learn is by doing so. Start out with a few orange Tubastrea and work your way from there.

I added a 30gal tank to my sps system. I used dry rock & let it set in saltwater from water changes with a power head for 3 weeks, & live sand. I didn't think there would be a cycle but there is. I'm waiting till the brown algae is done before adding any nps corals. Definitely ready to jump in, tank isn't quite ready yet.

Just thought I would tag along. A small piece of Blue Stylaster has become available at one of my local shops. I have been watching and researching for some time now. Just looking for any insight that might be offered from some of you that have experience. What is the growth rate for these guys? I have 120 SPS mixed reef with an area that has a cave lke structure at the top. good flow no light.. this spot was created for as an NPS area. What are you guys feeding? Any insight greatly appreciated.

I was not able to keep mine alive, if it ever was alive. The good and bad thing is when they die they don't lose their color. Its good becasue they look good dead if you can keep the algae off it, but i woudl rather have it live. You have to see the polyps to know it is alive and they are very hard to see and usually only appear at night.

OK I just ordered one from DD tonight. I presume since they have very small polyps they need very small food. Any pics & info on the one you guys have welcome.
