Styrofoam in saltwater for aquascaping

According to an Owens/Corning Glass company MSDS on polystyrene, it shouldn't harm fish.

but depending on the source of the styrofoam, and its intended application, it may also have additives included like fire retardants, anti fungal. who knows what else. styrofoam has been used as float block for float docks. salt water doesn't seem to bother it much, but UV light does cause it to break down. to what, I'm not sure.

Has Leroy at GARF tried mixing styrofoam to make his rock? I know he has tried all kinds of stuff.

It wouldn't be mixed or broken up into the concrete but as a base to spray over concrete. It forms a base to shape anyway you wwant and then the concrete gives it texture.

This is a cool design I was planning to make some walls and towers using this as a base. It will also cover my overflow.

should be ok, as far as i can figure. but it you use too much foam and too little shotcrete, your sculpture just may float to the top.

sounds like a cool art project. Have you considered that expanding foam they use in ponds to seal stuff. I cant remember, was it Russel Queen who used some of that on the overflow for disguise? or another tank project on RC somewhere? spray it on, let it expand and cure, then carve with a rotary wheel? then shotcrete?

You could build Atlantis as the back drop to your aquarium.

Cool!!
