Styrofoam under the tank?

I've heard that some people put some sort of styrofoam or cushioning under their tanks before they fill them to help with the weight distribution and prevent a tank from cracking. How many of you do this? What exactly should I use? I'm setting up a 75g tank in the next few weeks.

I don't do that. ANything between a tank and the stand makes me nervous.

I think that's mainly just for acrylic tanks. Acrylic needs to have the entire bottom supported where as glass tanks only need to have the edges.

I don't think you need it under a 75 as you aren't talking about a lot of weight. I have it under all my tanks to spread any pressure points out, but all of my tanks are pretty big. It basically helps even out a stand that may not be perfect. You can use the foam insulation sheets from any of the home improvement stores.

It's also used on glass tanks where any sharp pressure point can shatter the bottom piece.

I agree, it shouldn't be necesarry on a 75g.. my tank is 12 years old and i've had it for 2 years with nothing under it.

I used a thin sheet of foam insulation for my 75 gallon just to be safe. I'd definitely spend the few bucks to do it.
