Substrate and seahorses

Still hammering out the details on our 34g solana seahorse tank set up and my wife has come across caribsea araq-alive indo-pacific black substrate. http://www.caribsea.com/pages/products/aragalive.html

I see it says it doesnt work with the berlin system which with my limited knowledge basically is using the substrate, live rock, and a protein skimmer as the filtration system. So my question is does this rule out using this substrate for our tank. We are planning for 2 seahorses, live rock, and coral and like the look of the black substrate. any help would be appreciated thanks!

Live?

Live?

I think it would work, as the sand would slowly seed with good bacteria and living creatures from your live rock. You may have a longer wait time while it does cycle. Make sure your ammonia and nitrites are zero, and nitrate numbers are very low before adding any seahorses.

JMHO.
