Successful miracle mud reefers!

I am on the verge of ordering a decent skimmer for my new 'soon to arrive' 8x2x2 tank. I really want to try the miracle mud method - but I am tired of hearing everyone talk it down.

I know all the arguements that the mud is a gimic, that the same can be achieved with a dsb and macro, and so on.

I've also heard allot of folks claiming its a gimic, but they have not tried it.

Is there anyone here with a sucessful reef tank, and a miracle mud set up - not a hybrid, or similar system - but an actual miracle mud system, as per instructions.

I really appreciate everyones opinions, but I am looking for input here from peolpe who have actually tried it. If you cannot be bothered getting into a debate, and would prefer to PM me, then please pm me.

Thanks guys,

Matt

I tried it for a few months (about 6) and things went surprisingly well. I did my own little experiment and added a skimmer to the system. The very next day, the water was incredibly clear, so the skimmer stayed (the mud is still there as well.) The mud seems to be an excellent medium for small creatures to live, but any mud is probably capable of this. I have recently removed all the culerpa from the fuge (no easy task) and will remove the mud in a few weeks.

I guess my sump/fuge is sort of a hybrid, though I modeled it after the MM system (and saved mucho bucks in the process.) I used base nano rock rather than bio-balls.

Old Salty,

Thanks for the reply. So in short, you tried it, it worked ok, but you prefer the skimmer approach and hence are referting back to it? Might I ask, why are you removing the mud and caulerpa?

Thanks,

Matt

I set a mud set up 180gl at a local pet store w/no skimmer just a calcium reactor. It has many lps and sps coral and to my knowledge has worked very well. Check out the new edition of coral magazine there is an article.
