Successful QT

My question is what are some methods for controlling ammonia in a basic QT?
Below is my experience;
I built the basic 10gal QT and had it up and running 30+ days while the PVC & ceramic media for the HOB were in my sump. During the "cycle" I heated to 78deg, ran the HOB & added some BOI-Spira about 1oz.
Applied the PVC and the media 1 day before I added 3 fish 2 sm gobies & a 1.5" Flame Angle.
Day3 ammonia badge =0 just to be safe I tested with a API NH3/NH4 kit and got something like .5ppm I had been doing WC everyday about 1% removing uneaten food. On day 5 no change the fish are OK not as comfortable as I would like. Day 6 I do a 30% WC and through in a pice of live rock from my sump the ammonia seems to be hanging around .25-.5ppm the fish now day 7 have really settled and are eating more.
My plan was to observe and 2 stints of prazipro but was not planning on having rock in there.
Thanks for reading!

I use a product called TLC startsmart to cycle all my tanks, QT included. I have a marineland HOB filter loaded down with Sera Siporax with pvc a few pieces of rock in the tank. Never have had a issue with ammonia in QT and have really never done a water change while QTing either. I feed the fish liberally at least 3 times per day minimum.
