sudden death

My yellow tang died lastnight. It was unexpected and I have no idea what happened. He was fine all evening, swimming and acting normal then right before I went to bed I found him dead on the bottom. He had no visible signs of anything wrong. I bet it had only been a hour or so from the last time I looked at the tank. Any ideas? Have any of you had a sudden death like that?

Yep. Several months ago. I had the tang for probably 6 years, then, boom. Eating and fine in the a.m. Dead by dark. At least he didn't suffer. No events to prompt it. No marks either. Guess we should all be so lucky.

How long did you have the Tang? Was he getting alot of greens everyday? How big was he? Does he or any other fish in your tank show any signs of illnes like lateral line? Was it out and about or hiding alot? Ever check your tank for stray voltage? Sounds maybe like stress or nutritional, maybe, if you had it for a long time but it's hard to say without knowing more... sorry to hear about it, yellow tangs are a fav of mine...

Maybe he was old. I mean you never know how old tangs are when they are collected. They cannot be captive bred so there is no way to actually know how old he was. He may just have died from natural causes. I wonder what the average lifespan is for yellow tangs? I have had the same one in my tank for approximately seven years now.

I got the tang right after christmas. He was a smaller guy about 4" or so. He got plenty of greens and was out and swimming everyday. He was the most active fish in the tank. Very bright yellow and looked perfect. No stray voltage that I know of and all other life in the tank is as it always has been. (alive and healthy) Other then the little battle I had with ich a while back I have had no issues.
