Hi Everyone, I finally got my 75 gal this past weekend. I already have it set up and my fish seem happy with their new space. For right now I just threw my old filter in the tank, since I have a skimmer I figure it would be ok for now, even though its to small. I was looking for suggestions in the way of a new filter. I think I am going to go with another HOB filter. I have read a lot about canister filters and they seem like high maintenance to me. So what does everyone recommend?

I have heard you have to clean them often or they start leaching back into your tank? Whats your experience with this?

It all depends on what you plan on doing with the aquarium. I would not recommend a canister filter as the primary filter on any reef tank. Canister filters are great bacterial filter but on a reef tank they seem to become nothing more then nitrate boosters. I use canisters (all are Magnum 350)on a few of my FO saltwater aquariums with no complaints other then slightly more work to clean then a HOB filter. I also use AquaClear HOB filters on a few other FO saltwater aquarium and have found that they also work well but it is very important to dismantle and clean regularly to keep the water from channeling around, rather then through, the filter media. Regular cleaning also helps to keep them quite. So canisters and HOB filters are both thumbs up for FO but for a reef I would always go with a sump, the larger the better.

I have a 75 gal FOWLR

Filtration setup:

Magnum 350 for carbon and added water circulation
Sump w/ LR and Cheato - Also great to hide heater, skimmer & my pinpoint probes.

I also sometimes use an Emperor 400 for circulation and carbon, Chemi-pure and phosban.

Overkill i know... LOL
ASM G3 skimmer

I have a 65g w/ eheim 229 wet dry , coralief superskimmer 125, rena xp3, intank refugium, 40 lbs vaious live rock ---

i sold off the eheim 229 last week --no problems

I also have a 20 gallon tank w/ live rock and macro algae and only a lil penguin 100 power filter that requires no maintenance and has less algae than the big tank.

basically -- i'd make sure you have a good skimmer, live rock and your fine. you can add a canister for water polishing and carbon
